The All-New Porsche 911 992 Spy Shots & GT3 change up!

Yesterday, Porsche released a heavily camouflaged image of the new 992 generation of the 911. What we can tell from the photos is that it looks like a 911, but they also strongly hinted that it may have some electrification in its future. Sources say it's not a commitment statement below, but they are toying with the idea. Read for yourself.

Here is the official release quoting the 911 model line director August Achleitner:

Quote:
Electric drive technology is a good example. “Two years ago I’d have said no way. Today I wouldn’t categorically rule it out,” concedes the head of the model line.

Just to preclude any misunderstandings: the Porsche 911, Type 992 is not an electric sports car. But it could be an option somewhere down the line. Achleitner describes his ongoing change of heart: “I drove the prototype of our coming electric sports car, the Mission E, and it was a very compelling experience. And the performance of the Porsche LMP race cars with hybrid drive systems is quite simply sensational.”

Achleitner is certain that no car with a combustion engine alone could beat them around the corner. Although he admittedly clings to the flat-six engine, he can, nowadays, imagine an electric motor in the 911. So there will be a next step in terms of drive technology—if it fits Porsche and the specific character of the 911.
He also added a few other points:

Quote:
“Even when it comes to the individual assistance systems, they have to fit with the 911. A 911 will always have a steering wheel.”

And if autonomously driving cars break through more quickly than expected: “Then the 911 will be one of the last cars to drive autonomously.”
Read the GT3 news at post #22 of this thread! Could this be the end of the NA in the GT3?

What are your thoughts about the next generation 911?

I know it’s camouflaged but the current 911 shape just doesn’t do anything for me. An enormous jelly bean.

It looks like they have taken great pains to make it look more spry, lighter, less bulky and massive.

They did that trick so well on the 918 that I could not tell the scale of the car in photos without a driver.

The proportion of the wheels to the rest of the car posted is almost cartoon-like, but in an awesome way.

Are those 24" wheels or something?

EDIT:

Found this.........................

A detail that the development cars reveal is the possible use of staggered wheel sizes. The car seen here in pictures seems to be running 20-inch wheels recognisable from the current 911 on the front axle and what look to be Panamera-sourced 21-inch wheels on the rear axle. Porsche has already used this combination of taller rear wheels and smaller fronts on the 911, but only the extreme GT3 RS and GT2 RS.

That's a big car doing it's best to look like a small car.

It freaks me out how they can do this repeatably.

Is that a midget standing behind it, or did it get even bigger?

It's one 911 I will never own. Maybe it's time to kill it off.

I think the engine cooling system needs a little more development.

I'll wait to hate it until it is here.

I really loved driving the 991.

It's a nice looking GT car. But I think we can safely say that the original DNA of the 911 has long ago been bred out of the lineage.

Narrow is a fundamental of fun to drive on an old twisty road.

I think side crash safety combined with (wheelbase)(track) EPA regulations are the prime reasons for size.

Our ideas of the 911 as a sports car being the original is somewhat misplaced, the raw 911's were stripped down from their standard counterparts. The 911 RS was low production compared to the more comfortable standard version.

Porsche's sports cars were the 904, 906, 908, 910, 917, etc... The 911 offered a lot of "comfort" for its day standard.

The 911 had back seats, and was very nearly put into production as a four door.

I wonder what the red buttons do in that cockpit photo. Seat ejection?

I think it looks nice but based on how I heard the 991 is difficult to do basic maintenance on, I may pass...until it is 20 years old and 1/5 the cost.

That car is YUGE. It looks like the idea of a compact sports car is gone for Porsche.

The rear deck spoiler is interesting.

The tail lights are a bit cylon/tesla/toyota/transformer looking and probably not very visible going into the afternoon sun.

The smooth rear valence (on the yellow one) says to the guy driving behind: "Hit me, I'm a bumper car".

Other than that, my only prerequisite would be a drain plug.

I'm hoping that decklid changes, it doesn't look good! Interesting spoiler on it though. Not sure if I like it yet.
