Vintage Mercedes Benz

Trying to determine numbers matching Mercedes. Do they have COA (certificate of authenticity) like Porsche? or a data base? If so where do I get it?

speeder 02-04-2019 05:37 PM

What year car?

drcoastline 02-04-2019 05:46 PM

Hey Denis,

Right up your alley 66. It's In Irvine may need to retain your services again.

speeder 02-04-2019 05:56 PM

If the original books are in the car, there will be a page in either the owners manual or warranty book w all of the numbers in it, engine/transmission/chassis. On that year, it may be a loose card the size of a page in the book w holes in it, an actual computer punch-card from the pre-historic age.

The numbers may also be on a data plate somewhere on the chassis, which model is it? I can check for you tomorrow.

I'll PM you.

Here's a nice 3.5 convertible that was in the shop the other day, these are getting expensive. :)

Getting expensive? That's an understament.

speeder 02-04-2019 06:32 PM

$250k+

drcoastline 02-04-2019 06:40 PM

No matter how you slice it, that is expensive.

greglepore 02-05-2019 04:53 AM

Those dashboards send chills up my spine.

billybek 02-05-2019 05:02 AM

Ah, the rear seat room sucks....;)

slow&rusty 02-05-2019 05:10 AM

Opulence redefined.

The coupe versions are affordable. I had a 250se and the build quality was so impressive. The finest of materials. It’s 60s engineering so you have to rev the piss out of them on th freeway but they seem more happy than the driver doing such high revs. I think it was Paul Bracq who designed it and his lines were simply perfect. Experience one before you die.

Prettiest sedans ever produced. No idea how rolls sold anything outside the UK

Grandfather had a 1968 or 69 280 SE. That thing was built like a tank, right down to the doors that seemed like they were solid enough to put on the entrance to Cheyenne Mountain

For W111s? Are you sure about that? Last I checked, primo examples were hammering just over $100k. Still a lot of cabbage.

Yeah, I'm sure. You're a little behind the times, here's an example:

The internet offers many more examples of restored cars selling for similar or more in the last couple years.

Yes, of course immaculate trailer queens will always command top dollar, but I don't think that is the price of entry as your post implied.
For many of us, W111s are still in reach. Let's reference a favorite site of some users here.

Lots of RNM, but some good cars trading at decent prices.

speeder 02-05-2019 12:05 PM

Sorry, I was referring specifically to 3.5 convertibles like the one I posted. As for condition, I haven’t seen one in less than mint condition for the last 20 years. They have been expensive forever, though that meant $50k back in 2001.

Other, lesser coupes and convertibles are a lot cheaper and frequently seen in beat-up or driver condition. Nice 3.5 cabs are $250k+.

These have been pricey for a while now, but it blows my mind that these go for more than a chrome-bumper Corniche.
