Not sure I know how to buy a new car anymore
Just kicking around a few ideas. I test drove a new 3.5L eco boost F150 today. 4x4 with FX4 Lariat package. It ran and drive great. Vast expanse of interior space. Lots of cool new technology (I bet the owners manual is huge) $59,000! Wtf? They immediately dropped $3k “to show us they are serious”. When we were leaving, the manager said, what if I drop it another $10k? How exactly can I research invoice pricing again? It’s been over a decade since car shopping. I’m rusty. I can’t even recall the SOP to buying anymore. The Apple Sync thing was awesome. |
AAA has agreed pricing that is pretty good. If you are a member, call 'em amd tell 'em exactly what you want, they'll have their dealer in the state call you with a no BS price
|
There are a ton of good sites about this that would be better reading than a bunch of guys on a forum. I would recommend starting with Edmunds. There are a lot more like Nerdwallet.

Right now, GM and Dodge are offering their trucks at 20% off list! The Ford dealers haven't had to do that as the F150s and Super Dutys seem to fly off the lot. $13K off the list price of an F150 is a really good offer! I have a 2014 F150 w/5.0 V8 that has been a REALLY good truck! So far, it has only required regular maintenance and one set of tires (92,000 miles). Personally, I would rather have the 5.0 V8 than the V6 turbo. In the long run, the turbo engine will require more $$$ for maintenance.

I can make a phone call on Monday and tell you what Ford A plan is if it would help.
BTW, you're supposed to look at the salesman and say "you're tryin ta screw me blind!" I'm pretty sure that's SOP for dealing with car salesmen. Here's what I do. I walk into the dealership. I tell them "I'm going to buy a vehicle today. I want your best cash price out the door. I'm going to check two other dealers and will not share your numbers with them. If you end up the best price, I'll be back in a few hours to finalize the deal. If not, your deal wasn't the best I could find" |
I don’t know either. Last new ford I bought, I called my dads friend that owns the ford dealer and told him what I wanted, paid $500 over his cost and picked it up. Not sure I’d like the normal car buying ways....

Costco does the same thing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
You can also use Edmunds to get the invoice pricing.

Costco or AAA would not have anywhere close to the best possible price on that new F-150. They simply get a modest discount price from the cooperating dealers in exchange for sending them "lay down" customers who think they are getting a deal and will not haggle.
Someone above said that they bought a car for $500 "over his cost"...you would have absolutely no idea what his cost was unless you knew exactly what hold-back cash he was getting from Ford, etc. If you paid $500 over the invoice he showed you for the car, you might have paid $2500 over his cost. The invoices do not show any of the incentives or hold-back cash the dealer gets from the manufacturer. The only way to find out how cheap a vehicle can be is to do what Cliff described in the first post. Walk out after negotiating a preliminary price and see how far they are willing to bend over to gain a parking space in their lot. You don't need to buy a truck. They need to sell a truck. :) |

I'm in sales. I get the game. When a customer tells me they've been shopping and can buy the same machine I have for less I ask them "why were we talking then?" Or when a customer tells me the other guy's number I typically give them my advertised price because I'm not getting in a game where the customer is showing the competition my number. Maybe I'm a bit different than most but because I'm in sales I tend to keep things fair. I figure anyone can beat a price if they know what the price is. I have on several occasions had callers tell me they could buy a machine for significantly less than what I'm asking for my machine. Sometimes the number they throw out is below what i have in my equipment. I'm quick to tell them, you better go buy it, because if I find it you won't get the chance to. NOTHING puts a smile on my face more than having a guy call me a few days after saying he could find one cheaper to check on my machine and it's sold to someone else. Moral to the story? Don't bull**** the salesman and be fair by not showing the other salesmen the numbers from other dealers. Let them know you're going to buy either from them or the person with the best deal. Sometimes the best deal isn't the lowest dollar purchase. Sometimes it's oil changes and tire rotations. It might be some kind of extended warranty plan thrown in if you're buying used. |
When I bought my Ram in 2012 (first new vehicle) they promised me all kinds of discounts. I told them I would pay 3% over their cost, they got out their invoice and showed it to me, and the 3% was much cheaper than what they were offering me in discounts.
They took my offer |
My oldest son attended the Atlanta auto show on Friday . He said the place was crawling with pick up trucks @ $65K and higher ! Man am I out of touch with modern vehicle pricing  There is no way in $%ll I would pay anywhere near that for a truck , regardless of how many bells and whistles it has . I can see how some go vehicle poor real quick :( I know at some point I will have to start replacing my fleet but being retired the MOST I would do is go certified used .

Any truth to what I heard about cash not being “king”? I’ve heard that they stand to make a bunch of money off of interest on a loan, so they will discount the price farther than on a cash offer, so you should finance and then pay right off if cash was your plan?

They ask: "How will you be paying?" and my standard answer is: "No use thinking about that if we can't agree on a price." Last time I bought from dealer, after the normal haggle session, we finally agreed to my price. Then the sales dude's shoulders visibly slumped when I pulled a checkbook out of my rear pocket. I think I did good. |
