the designer dog thread

My 12yo daughter wants a dog to call hers. She has a congenital physical disability (Laing myopathy) so I have a massive soft spot for her. Her mom (my ex) dislike dogs but has agreed to a goldendoodle to go back and forth with my daughter. A neighbor had a Golden Retriever which was the only dog she has ever given the time of day and my ex wants to avoid shedding. So, I'm asking for opinions and/or experiences. Thanks.

Hi energy pup that will need lots and lots of exercise if you want to have a reasonable quality of life. “Doodles” of various types are near the most turned-in breeds at the pound. Do your research. If your ex dislikes dogs, consider something smaller and easier to live with that doesn’t shed. Havanese comes to mind.

Decide how you feel about dog hair first and that will affect your choices quite a bit.

Doodles are great but they have a lot of energy and can get pretty big so if you have delicate physical situations it might be a challenge.

Pug. We have chugs, chihuahua pugs and they are fun as hell. Don’t shed much, eight pounds, and pugs were bred to basically lay around all day. I always was a big dog guy, my last dog before these was a 125 lb Shepherd lab mix that was sweet as could be . We have found all of our dogs, or they found us so little dogs were a new experience . Chihuahuas are fiercely loyal to their owner and will follow them everywhere.

He's not exactly a "doodle" but I have a Lhasapoo...part Lhasa Apso & part miniature Poodle. Small (16lbs), doesn't shed, easily housebroken, loaded w/personality, is a great companion and doesn't need a 'job' or serious exercise (but loves going for a walk). Jack is often mistaken for a Havanese.

My buddy has a labradoodle. A bit clingy but very sweet and smart.

Thought this would be a derogatory thread about breed mixing or breed purity so I was ready to drop the pic of the dogs with glitter on their nutsacks

Ah, what the heck...

Not a designer dog but a purebred; We are currently looking into Portuguese Water Dogs because they have very low allergens, don’t shed much (they have hair rather than fur), love to run, are very smart and trainable. The only downside is that because they are smart you have to be dedicated to keeping them challenged, walk or run them rain or shine. They are loving family dogs that don’t bark much, except when people approach the house. They also have manageable weights, averaging 45 lbs.

My Shih Tzu Bodhi looks a lot like rcooled's Jack- same weight, too.

I think pavulon is looking for experiences with goldendoodles. I think the generation of the cross affects the look and shedding of the dog, but I'm not sure. Is energy level an issue? If so, that would affect the breed.

Can’t go wrong with golden retrievers.
Best disposition and intelligence. Very affectionate. We rescued these bro and sis when they were one year old.
Originally purchased from a breeder in Hokkaido. I think they’re English Goldens based on their size and color.
Live outside. Super hairy. Happy.

Labradoodle/Smoodle/Noodle, they are all great. A really good idea for your daughter. A great focus for her and a sense of resonsibility in looking after dog. All those "nice" breeds for dog are suitable. What fun.

I love my pug, but he sheds all over the damn place. Constant vacuuming to keep up.

We have a black goldendoodle. HE is 8 years old and by far the best mannered, most intelligent dog we have ever owned. Incredibly easy to train. He has never been high energy. I believe people are referring to the Labradoodle when referring to high energy. The goldens are not.
I would not hesitate to get the golden for her.
Great dogs.

There is a difference in breeding. My oldest step daughter has a backyard bred, bought from Craigslist Golden Doodle. She's a sweet dog but also a high stress, constantly moving anxiety ridden very large mess. A doodle with good breeding will cost big bucks. One of our mutts is a maltese/poodle mix. Very smart, less than 15 lbs and going pretty strong at 18. The poodle and poodle mixes, if they have the right poodle content, are allergen free and won't shed but do need regular bathing and grooming. Our maltipoo is smarter than all of us.

Our Goldendoodle, Edward, I must admit was NOT a cheap craigslister....I am sure the breeding is critical. HE is from a very reputable breeder, but really for something that is going to be a big part of your family, why would you try to find the bargain?

Relatives bought a labradoodle. Fun dog, but high-energy is an understatement! If the ex doesn't like dogs, she probably will like shedding dogs even less. Might want to research non-shedding breeds.
