Denis, I didn’t know you were into Saab, very cool. I still casually look for an ‘80s 900 SPG or 9000 Aero, very underrated and unique cars.

I owned a bunch of Saabs. Mine were all 80s/90s 900s and 9000s. Always liked the Sonnett. Didn't know they were constructed like that.

Sonnetts were turds. Ugly, poorly made, slow... the only ones I ever saw in person were owned by guys that were not what you'd call car guys. A cheap, entry level "sports car" for guys that had no idea what a sports car was.

My neighbor had one. I don't think I ever saw him out driving it.

The 9000 Aero was the fastest production sedan in the world when it was new...

Had a 91 900 SPG... what a great car... fast...

I'm gonna take a wild guess, that you were never a sales person for a SAAB dealership:p
I kind of assumed they would be an aquired taste. I can't tell you the last one I saw running down the road
I think the owners of the local foreign auto salvage had a nice one back in the 90's, that they drove around a little .

A couple friends of mine had the SAAB franchise in Tulsa. SAAB made some decent cars in the 80s and 90s, not that they appealed to me, but the Sonnett wasn’t typical of what they made. The Sonnett was essentially kit car quality and I wouldn’t be caught dead driving in one. They are on par with an early Lotus Europa, another car you couldn’t give me if it had 100 grand stashed in the trunk.

I’ll take the Lotus w $100k in the trunk that JR doesn’t want! :)

I had one, it was a rocket on the highway. Even with an MBC bumping up boost it still got about 35 MPG on the highway and was massive inside.

Warning, saab story

Saabs are extreme quirkiness, but a hoot to drive. My 1st encounter was my folks buying a new 72 99. My Mom was not much interested in cars or driving, in fact as a passenger she was always hitting the brakes and telling father to slow down. Mom drove the car home from the dealer and that was it. You couldn't get her out of it. All of the sudden she was driving all over the place picking up friends to do this or that. Sometimes I would see her in the driveway just sitting in the car with the sunroof open. Funniest thing I ever saw. They bought 2 or 3 more over the next decade or two. About 5 years after they bought the 99 I bought a used 96. It wasn't bad on power coming from a Bug, but next to a 383 V8 it was a snail. Got 49 mpg loaded with 3 people, a dog and a months worth of clothing driving to Maine from PA. Another trip was to Ashville, NC and was traveling on 81 south through the mountains up and down for hours/miles. 1st really big mountain I went down I realized to late that I had left it in 'free-wheeling'. Trucks were a solid line in the right lane so I couldn't get to the shoulder to brake. Thought I was going to die! Finally coasted down the mountain going maybe 95-100+ who knows; braking lightly, afraid I was going to burn them to a crisp. Finally reaching the bottom of the mountain I got out, walked it off, took a pee behind the bushes and switched from free-wheeling. Tons of other experiences, but one thing about driving a Saab; its definitely never an ordinary ride. Slow or not, anyone considering themselves a car person I encourage to drive early Saab at least once!
Buy the Sonnet, some things aren't about the cost or return on investment it's about the fun.

PS:
Don't buy one with rust!
