Going to see a 996, oil analysis report....
 

I'm going to see a 996 tomorrow. 100k, has had IMS done with the LN bearing at 75k.

There is a oil analysis report in the photos. Report sounds reasonably positive. Curious if anyone knows how to read the numbers, and can tell me what they think.

That is a good looking 996.1. Honest looking and seller sounds trustworthy. Don’t have any experience with the Blackstone guys but here is a link to a legend of the reports.

What happened to the manuals? Looks like they fell out of the glove box and we're run over several times

I'd be more concerned about the K&N air filter. That's usually an automatic deal-killer for me on anything other than a full race engine or some swamp donkey vehicle that just needs to run for now. Why on earth would anyone want to modify their intake filtration to suck in more dirt? Do they think that piston rings really last longer w a little dirt bath? :confused:

That 'first' report is almost 2 years old.
Any chance you could get a updated sample in to Blackstone?
How many miles since the first sample?

Date on the report is 10/19/2018.

What on earth oil are they using? Who needs a 6.0 TBN in car? Do you know which oil was used?

TBN is the measure of anti-acid additive package.

Per the UOA report, looks like he was using M1 0w40 which is factory spec. I don’t recall seeing moly in M1 0w40, and the zinc and phosphorous look a little low, so I can’t help but wonder if it was a different oil. The iron is on the high side, but not catastrophically so. Otherwise, the report looks good for the miles.

The TBN of 6 is healthy, M1 starts around 10 or 11 if I recall. But the viscosity looks low, though that’s the usual complaint for why many think that M1 0w40 isn’t enough oil for the M96 engines. The RL forums are filled with folks suggesting more expensive/thicker oils that are more shear resistant than M1 0w40.

There is a car in TN on the market. $8000. Has a cracked head. Owner does not want to fix.

That seems really high for a gasoline engine. Diesel I would understand. On our Landfill gas machines, the TBN starts around 5.5-6. And we have H2S in the gas, which causes acidification when it burns.

No matter what the comment says, the iron is higher than the average. The average was taken at around 4k miles, so the iron should be 1.5x or less. 4k average is 11ppm, so it should be 16ppm, yet it is more than double at 25. I would be concerned about it. Once the genie is out of the bottle, I couldn't help but worry about data. Of course, most cars you don't see this and wouldn't even know. If the engine was rebuilt, I'd say no problem as they may use different parts / tolerances than stock, but a stock engine ...

Oil analysis is popular with the airplane guys. Blackstone has a good reputation.

One report is usually worthless. Where oil analysis shines is seeing trends.
When one has several reports that pretty much mirror prior reports, and the next one shows something deviating from the norm, it tells one where to look for the issue, or in the case of large amounts of ferrous metal, impending doom. Better to ground the airplane before a catastrophic failure in flight.

With this one report, there is no baseline from which to compare.

Note that the comment guy says "YOU FOUND SOME MATERIAL IN THE OIL FILTER". Apparently the owner sent the oil analysis after being concerned finding shavings or something ...

I have NEVER found material in the oil filter on any of my vehicles. Dozens of open element filters and a half a dozen cut open cans as well.

I've found metallic particles in the oil of quite a few different cars, it's pretty normal. Larger pieces are signs of trouble.

As for the 996 it looks like a nice honest car. I would ask about the clutch, I assume it was replaced at the same time as the IMS but it can't hurt to check. If everything checks out, buy it and enjoy. They are great cars that are still followed by a stigma largely based on ignorance.
