Half as old as I am would be a flintlock. I have my dad's Belgian one from the 1800s. When they were first married (1946), they charged it up with black powder, made a "bullet" out of a piece of broomstick, put it in a vise on a workbench, got behind a bunch of boxes, and fired it by pulling a string attached to the trigger. Dad said it made a lot of smoke. Hard to imagine the quiet, reserved folks who raised me doing that! It still has the vise marks on the handle, and I smile whenever I see them. Dad's been gone for almost 25 years, but it's nice to have that memory.

But Fiocchi 00 Defensive Load buckshot is what I'd use....in whatever you get.
Nice thing about the mossy for lefties is the tang mounted safety.

Must also mention the Browning BPS for the sinister folk. Good reliable, quality stuff. Bottom ejecting.

I have a Winchester Defender from the late 90’s and a Remington 870 that was owned by a sheriffs department that I Duracoated.

We have used both the 590 and 870 for work with solid results. Meaning they have held up well.

The 870 is the go to in my book, but not new. Needs to be older used. At least 20 years old. Can be found used easily and you can buy an 18.5 inch barrel for it.

If you want new, I'd go with the Benelli pump over a new anything else. I would not buy an auto for defense.

I had my g-g-g-grandfather's farm-spoon (since I was a kid and gf passed on) for over 4 decades....never shot it. 16 ga dbl bbl....gave it to a family member a few years back. Thanks to proof info David (Targa911s) sent me years ago...I determined it was Belgian from approx. 1890...mebbe not that old, but old is good :)

I've got a Savage 12 ga. pump action goose spoon with 7 round capacity, but with that short barrel you gotta get right up next to them gooses.

Cereal, I keep it for home defense and so far it has worked perfectly. No one has broken into my house since I bought it in 1980.
Come to think of it, I haven't fired it since 1981.

If you want the gun to do double duty as a part time skeet/trap/sporting clays rig, then consider the Mossberg 930. It's semi auto and will make you faster in follow up shots. Full disclosure, I prefer Mossberg to Remington mostly because I prefer the thumb safety on top. Others may prefer the crossbolt safety in the trigger guard that Remington uses. Both make fine shotguns in your price point.
Plastic/composite stocks aren't always that great. This one broke while he was pumping it. He is a Marine so...

there are a couple of over/under "tactical" shotguns that caught my eye.

but there are flaws. first!! auto safety when you pivot open and close the gun. fine for the quail field, not so much when Mr Bad is coming in. second. NO EJECTORS!! who the eff would not install ejectors on a gun like that?! i can load a break open gun in an instant. especially with one of those sleeves that puts the spare shells right there on the side of the shotgun.

i want one, but i would want both of those things addressed. that Stoeger is cheap, but no thanks.

i bet SxS shotguns have been chasing off farm boys from farm girls for decades. super reliable and zero jams.

My only uncle last shot my back in the early 70s.....he had six younger sisters :).

A loaded SxS stood in the corner of both my grandparents houses as a youngin'.... more kids running around than a goat farm.

i like it as well. and i dont need another shotgun either. but in my defense. i dont have one like that. i think if i was gonna get one of that genre..it would be a Benelli. M4 stainless.

I've got a Benelli M2 and love it. Simple, well made, fast action. When it was a ten shot it sounded like a machine gun if I wanted it to. We now have new gun laws :( so I've made it a five shot. Still fun, but not as much fun.

The measure is to throw by hand, a bunch of clays into the air and shoot as many as you can before they hit the ground.
