Somebody well worth mentioning in the history of aeronautics:
(the pilots and entire team also deserve equal mention.) ![]() I watched Discovery Channel "Future Flight". https://www.oldies.com/product-view/6167JD.html They went into freaking space, on a limited shoestring budget and schedule, using nothing but duct tape and left over bailing wire. "Looks about right. Let's do it." The entire thing is a miracle. John Denver crashed in his new Rutan Long-EZ because he did not check fuel before flight.

I have (as a CDR I worked in the Y/Z program office at Pax and was able to get a ride on a Low Rate Initial Production Y. I have ridden in single engine Hueys, never piloted one. The difference between yesterday's Huey and the Y is astounding.

And it was sticking, leading to flipping over after pushing a pedal for leverage afaik. Denver was an experienced pilot and had flown it briefly the day before as an intro flight. He must have been aware of that problem and awareness of all aircraft controls were not yet instinctual. He also must have been aware of the fuel levels as well. Supposedly ground crew offered to fill it up or check it pre-flight, but he declined, thinking there was more remaining than there actually was (6gal i think). That plane was capable of holding so much more. A combination of basic mistakes from a very well liked person. I hope other pilots keep that in the back of their minds and his needless death serves a purpose.

The Icon A5 doesn't have power, speed, acrobatics, or range.
But it's got everything else.

The Icon is also LSA so just about anyone can fly it.
