What is your favorite (fun) daily driver?

So far I think mine are:

2000 Subaru WRX
Mini Cooper S JCW R53
Abarth 500
1988 Mustang LX (in my youth)
1985 GLH

I may replace the JCW next year with a Golf R when my son turns 16 and gets my JWC.

My 911 didn't make the list because its not a daily.

2018 Mini JCW
It’s been great.
Eventually I’ll add the Dinan elite to it.
Cheers

I had an 02 MCS and a 10 MCS. Both were great DDs that were fun as hell! I would like to try an Abarth next.

'03 350z was exceptionally fun. Light, fast, solid car--never had any problems with it. Gave it to my daughter when she turned 16. Still miss driving it.

2013 Ural Patrol

With summer here it gets me to work. Fetches groceries, takes the dogs to the beach and is my general all around utility vehicle.

masraum 07-18-2019 02:55 PM

1988 911
2008 Boxster S
2004 Mazdaspeed Miata
1997 Mazda Miata
1965 Chevy Impala 2 door, 350, 4 speed

I will admit, that I have had fun in a bunch of really crappy econoboxes when I was young and poor.

I daily-drove my 3.6L 911 for several years

NA Miata. All up to '97.

I was behind a guy yesterday driving a Mercedes AMG E63S Wagon. I suspect that's a fun driver.

JackDidley 07-18-2019 04:50 PM

Current Caymen S. Before that, Corvettes since 1980.1970-1980 I had a variety of economy cars for daily drivers.

1973 Vega Wagon (college, car saw a lot, building fell on it, first engine replacement)
1969 VW Squareback (loved it.... tons of fun, first job, second engine replacement)
1984 318i (great driver it was henna red, leased, beat the crap out of it)
1986 528E (mellow, loved sliding it in the snow)
1993 325i (sport sedan; gave good ride home)
2001 LR Discovery (utilitarian, great for family, could not pass a gas station)

That M3 Thom has is a really groovy color too.

I generally select cars on the basis of how fun they are to drive.

last daily drivers have been

Mazdaspeed Miata, have done some things to it, very engaging with a bit of suspension work. 2 seat roadster with a truck motor they hung a snail on. My wife hates it, rides too rough for her. I was surprised it was so inexpensive to insure. Wish it was some other color than grey.

Integra GSR sedan, prior to the Miata. Only new car I ever purchased. Surprised how expensive it was to insure, double what the Miata is. Got it new 11/97 with 4 miles on it. Sort of a GMO Civic, with upgraded everything. Would rev to 8200, fairly intoxicating when it got on the big part of the cam with the magical VTEC heads. Easy to drive, surprisingly quick, got better than 30 mpg driving it like I stole it from my ex-wife. I guess because it had pretty good aero, or the only 2600 pounds thing maybe. Came with HORRIBLE tires. Made up for being loud, with feeble dry grip, by being borderline terrifying in the wet. Sticky Yokohamas transformed the car. Would probably still be driving it, if it had not been killed by minivan. Would have been a decent track car, too bad.

'92 240 SX prior to the Integra, first car I got when I finished my residency in 1995. Hatchback, backseat like a 911. I drove a ton of cars when I got it, AWD turbo Eclipse, couple of Hondas, a couple of VWs and a Ford Escort GT that I would have gotten if the stealership did not try and slip some sketchy stuff past me. Spent a week test driving all sorts of sporty coupes. Decided on it the minute I went around the first corner. Only RWD car I tried, and I bought it.

Had a crappy little Ford sedan as a resident, because I had to have A/C in Houston

Prior to that was the Superbeetle convertible, which was like a big go cart, especially after I did the suspension and put disc brakes on the front. Humbling lack of power, incredible handling, considering the tiny wheels and tires it had. Mom has that one now, just put new carpet in it for her.

I rode a Honda CB400T everywhere for about 5 years, and that was fun. Because we tend to use motorcycles as toys rather than transportation, I think a lot of US riders miss out on how fun the day-to-day stuff can be.

Car-wise? My Porsche 944 comes first. Not just fun to drive, but practical. My second favorite would be my 2003 BMW 325i with manual.

Jim Richards 07-18-2019 06:59 PM

1970 and 1973 MG Midgets
1975 Datsun 280Z
1995 Porsche 993C2

2017 Ducati Multistrada Pikes Peak Edition. The Swiss army knife of motorcycles. Looks great, less filling. Surprises litre bikes. Always puts a grin on my face.

911

fanaudical 07-18-2019 08:10 PM

My current commute is too short to use the 911 daily; the oil doesn't get warmed up.

Most fun DD was definitely my old Audi Fox.

ckelly78z 07-19-2019 01:24 AM

I've been DD a 2004 Mustang GT convertible with 4.10 gears, tuned, and a few motor mods. 13.3 in 1/4 mile, and will bark the tires in 2nd, and 3rd gear with a modded automatic trans....triple black.
