What movie am I thinking of???

Sometime in the past 2-3 years, maybe less, there was a movie that I think was set in the 70s in Cali. I think it had a guy that was a private eye or thug of some sort and then some other guy got tangled up with that guy and there was murder and action and it also seemed to have some elements of comedy. I think they were trying to track down something that was stolen or something.

It looked entertaining. I figure it should be out on video or rental or something by now.

"inherent vice'? with Joquin Phoenix?

or "the good guys" with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crow?(good movie, I recommend).

Yep--the nice guys--good flick. Crowe and Gosling are both funny and have good "buddy movie" chemistry Good mix of action, plot, 70s references and comedy. I was hoping for a sequel.

I rarely buy DVD's except for musical concerts but Inherent Vice is one film I did buy because I was so enthralled with the premise, and I've watched it a lot of times. I keep seeing new stuff and it made me realize that River Phoenix is really an exceptional actor...

I think Dashiell Hammett wrote that basic storyline in the 1920s.

Not set in the 70's, but Repo Man and Southland Tales were basically that plot.

LOL you just described about a quarter of the movies that have been made in the past 50 years.
Not to mention the made-for TV shows in the 70's.
