There is an expiration date because of government regulation, simple.

Yep.

My wife has a hard time with that. I also suspect many companies put a short expiration date on things to get a lot of customers to trash a perfectly good product, and buy new.

When salt has an expiration date, it has gotten silly.

At our old work place we had an large attic filled with the crap from the previous building owner. He was a "preper" and had bought a years worth of canned dried food for two. It was a large stack of boxes, with four 1 gallon cans per box. Vacuum packed dried food. It was all from the 1970s, and none of it had an expiration date, or even a bar code. We just tossed the dried meats, but the cans of flour, sugar and salt and dried beans, rice, and veggies were certainly fine. We donated a van load of dried stuff to a local charity that feeds homeless people. I am certain if I was hungry, I would have loved to have the food.

I was surprised to see an expiration date on toothpaste

When you read the title fast

You guys are some smart fellers...tell me this...

Becomes

You guys are some fart smellers...tell me this...

Both versions accurate I'm sure.

Maybe some sort of date marking is FDA required just so it can be sold?

Or (as mentioned) the active ingredients have a certain shelf life before they eventually become inert?
Some meds are still viable well past the exp but a small percentage effective.

Maybe. In the factory we had to wear hair nets, and all the regulations were as if it was food. So maybe the date thing is part of the "comes under the umbrella of food".

Also, clean hands so the detergent doesn't get dirty LOL

Chemicals, ethel. I can't remember what went in but it made me want to use ordinary soap.

Once it hits its expiry date you simply have to shoot it .
2x .38 at close range , or if you’re pussy an extended mag ar15 at a distance it can’t attack you at .
Simple .
THE THING MUST DIE , OR IT WOULDN’T HAVE A DATE !!!

I didn't think I could actually put that in the thread TITLE...so I abstained.

People, it was a joke thread. I know exactly why there's an expiration date on my soap.

It's because it's made from rendered baby fat. That stuff goes rancid after a while.

That's because toothpaste is regulated as an OTC medication under 21 CFR 355 and Sodium Fluoride can degrade over time. If a manufacturer has data to support a 3 year stability no expiration date is needed.

Expiration dates on products like this are largely marketing hype to provoke the consumer to buy before the projected life cycle ends.

Of course, products for human consumption like milk do have a very limited shelf life. I remember some years ago where beer has a expiration date. There were even commercials about it. Again to provoke the consumer to shorten the life cycle / usage and buy again.

My wife totally buys into this crap - me not so much............

So does iodine solution. What happens after it expires, does it turn into some other element?

Rendered babies go bad? I did not know that.
