Son of a.....not my little Max

Rescue 12 pound JRT
Lived outside in MD for first 10 years of life
Called to me from Russell Rescue site
Flew cross-country to pick him up; rented a crappy Versa to drive him all the way back
Obstinate
Growler
Curmudgeon
Neurosis
Eats Frosty Paws
Sleeps in our bed
Loves all fruit (except those GD bananas)
Needs dental surgery
passes pre-surgery screen with trusted Vet
Comes home first night wonky and "inappropriate" psychologically
Back second day for fluids, pain meds, anti-inflammatory
Up all night pacing; four consecutive nights; relentlessly pacing
Force feeding
back to still-trusted Vet for more fluids
transferred to emergency specialist for 24/7 ICU care
second day in ICU, wife and I make the decision to end care
Visit with Max for 2 hours
Sits in lap; shakes violently initially, eventually recognizes me and goes into a fitful sleep
Vet comes in
Elevated Sodium levels
severe brain swelling
time to let go
sign paperwork
overdose delivered
two breaths and it's over
house empty
too silent
put his bed and toys away
confirmed plans with crematory
ordered urn

this shouldn't have happened
but I knew the risk
tough days ahead

My buddy Max
Heartbroken

Dammit, you're gonna make me cry. RIP Max!

Bugsinrugs 08-14-2019 02:43 PM

Too sad....I’m sorry.

Skytrooper 08-14-2019 02:43 PM

Oh man, I am so sorry. Poor Max, what a handsome fellow. You did rescue him and privided a good life regardless of the time together. It is always painful to lose a pup. Remember that you gave him a good life. 12 years living hardscrable to sleeping on the bed was pure heaven to him. He knew he was loved. R.I.P Max

Poetry.

Heartbreaking poetry.

Sorry about Max.

masraum 08-14-2019 02:57 PM

RIP, Max.

My condolences. We lost a pup 1.5 weeks ago. She was ~13 and not a big dog and had always been healthy. She was fine on Sat, sick on Sun and passed Mon morning. Then we had a scare with our other dog the following Sun. It was tooth related. He's recovering. We'll give Sherlock some extra loving as he mends in memory of Max.

Pets...they do leave holes of sadness in our hearts when they leave.

My sympathy...

He died happy .
You can do more ...

Without commentary

The time has come for the tears to end
for you to be happy and cheerful again.

I am safe in God’s home above
cradled in His arms; covered with His love.

We run and play by the Bridge all day
waiting for the day when you’ll be here to stay.

You’ve been crying so much I feel bad
I want you to be happy and not so sad.

Remember the time when I was so small
I couldn’t even pickup the rubber ball.
I fought that ball from morning to night
it made you laugh, I was quite a sight.

Remember teaching me sit and stay
we had such fun since I didn’t really obey.
but you kept at it with test after test
so when I entered my first show I was the best.

Remember the great times we had in the past
like when we walked to the park we had a blast.
We’d run and play all through the park
until the sun went down and it got dark.

Remember the times we went for a ride
I was so excited I’d jump right inside.
Away we went to who knows where
but you and I we didn’t really care.

I’ll always love you, you’re my best friend

I’ll be right with you even to the end.

Always remember the great times we had
and there will be no reason to ever be sad.

Dang it with these tear jerking threads! That said I believe we all gain from reading personal stuff like this. Sorry for your loss Todd, though I am certain if not now, but later, you will only see the positive when Max is remembered again.

So sorry Todd. That photo reminds me of Andrew Wyeth's "Master bedroom".RIP Max.

I couldn't help but love Max. It seems that towards the end of his life he got the love he deserved. Somebody he could be proud of.

pegasus9 08-14-2019 09:26 PM

I’m sorry for your loss. JRTs are the best. And he was a rescue.
My condolences.

Granting peace to your besty is one of the roughest acts of love.

billybek 08-15-2019 06:52 AM

Hope you are doing OK.

A heartfelt thank you, everyone.
