PNW Dirt Bikers - A bad day....

48 years of riding the Mountains around Lake Cle Elum........Dirt Bikes and Snowmobiles.....1st Time to ever call 911 and lead in Medics........

Good friend John recently retired from Boeing and following me up the hill. Sun in his eyes and didn't see the dirt rut....Crashed big.....I get to the top of mountain and return 15 minutes later to find:

7 broken ribs, broken collarbone and collasped lung ........Took forever to get medics to scene and I feel horrible..........Medics had to cut a chain on a gate and got lost....I had to leave John dying in the road and go find Medics.........Transported 100 miles to good Doc's in Seattle area.............

Got the bike recovered........Taking care of his 2 dogs and getting his wife back from Phoenix.......Sad day for sure...........

Lets hope for a full recovery. It could have been worse, he doesn't have a head injury and he didn't need life flight?

The ribs are going to be a long time healing, but they will heal.

Don't beat yourself up, you did all you could possibly do, and he's in good hands now.

He’ll be lucky to avoid being on a ventilator.

This is something we all (aging dirtbike riders) worry about when we hit new trails. I wish him luck/speed in his recovery, but there is nothing that takes the bite out of broken rib pain....been there, done that.

I was still able to get the bike uprighted, started, and limp home.

I'm sorry to hear of your friend's misfortune and I wish him a speedy recovery.

This incident, and hearing about the recent "distinguished gentleman's ride" has reminded me of the importance of wearing adequate safety gear when riding any motorcycle.

Be safe out there.

Sorry to hear about the crash. I went to 4 wheelers and a ten mile per hour average speed. This is slightly safer in a few ways, and more dangerous in a few others. Its a good compromise for me though. Hope he heals up quickly.

I hope your friend heals up quickly. Scary situation. I carry a SPOT as I ride mountain bikes solo in some remote areas.

All blessings to your buddy and you. If we ride long enough this stuff happens.

Yikes! I once broke three ribs. Horrible pain, long recovery.
So sorry this happened.

A wake-up call to back off a bit when conditions aren't perfect.

This is very scary Bob, but he is lucky he was riding with you and not someone who didn't know the area like the EMTs.

Best wishes for your friends recovery, Bob. Things like this are even harder to recover from as we get older.
