Dog owners- flea/tick/heart guard meds

Hello fellow dog owners and merry Christmas Eve 🙂 . My question specifically is about Simparica trio chewable medication . Anyone using it ? Yesterday we took Luke for his yearly exam . The vet suggested the Simparica .

It is an all in one chewable medication that covers heartworm/ticks/fleas/roundworms and hookworms . All the online reviews we have found are very positive. The vet stated they have had great success using it .

Luke currently gets monthly heart guard and then a topical flea/tick medicine applied to his back . To date no health issues or reactions . The phamplet the vet gave us on the Simparica does have warnings if used with dogs that have seizures. Luke does not have seizures .

So any of you using Simparica ? Any problems with it ? Should we stick with our current regimen that has proven effective with no side issues . Or try what the vet recommended ?

We have been using Nexgard for our two border collies. No issue other than it is expensive!

We give our dogs a monthly chewable heart-guard treat. They think it is the best doggy treat they get. Just once per month. It is just for heart-worms as far as I know and it is recommended by our vet. At the annual checkup they get the vaccinations, and he uses some liquid on the scruff of their neck for fleas and ticks.

Dogs are not cheap to keep healthy.

I've never used the applied topical drops (just not a fan), but if you do, get the good stuff from your vet... not the crap they sell in pet stores .... it's potentially dangerous to some pets.

Bravecto is awesome btw...

Haven't found a " country vet " yet and we are rural . We are on our third vet in our small community . Liked all of them but they must all use the same billing spreadsheet ☹️

We used Trifexis for our dog for ~17 years and had good luck. It seemed expensive, but in the grand scheme of things it wasn't much on a monthly basis. It kept him healthy. And it was a small price to pay.

Our vet switched 1-2 years ago to something else. We kept using Trifexis because we'd never had a bad reaction or anything.

We use something called Interceptor Plus. It is also monthly. It is for the prevention of heartworm infections & disease and the treatment and control of adult roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, and tapeworm infections in dogs. It can also prevent flea tapeworm infections in both adult dogs and puppies...but does not stop fleas and ticks as far as I know. Our dogs have never had fleas but get an occasional tick (maybe one or two a year that we remove immediately). We check them every time they go outside. They are never around other dogs or kids (and they have short hair).

We also use a country vet that is not awfully expensive. We buy the Interceptor Plus online through Allivet. https://www.allivet.com/. It usually has a pretty good discount or sale and free shipping if you spend over $49.

My vet carried Interceptor years ago ... my last Lab ate 'em for over 14 years. He switched to Iverheart by the time I got my 4.5 year old Lab.... I'm sure they are all pretty much the same. Moka gets fleas & ticks from the flea bag dawgies next door and romping in the woods daily.... One Bravecto and they are gone in a day or so.... like magic .

I just saw a receipt for her last annual visit .... $244 which included $50 for heartworm tabs.....

We used Bravecto one year when the ticks were really bad. It did seem to work. We keep the grass really short and walk my wife's purse-sized (about 5 lbs) dog on a leash (eagle or osprey from nearby eagle sanctuary would carry it off).

Simparica Trio is excellent. Safe and does what it says. Trust what your Vet says.

Cordelio and Interceptor. Because of his breed, rough coat Collie, is the only meds of those types they can tolerate. We buy it through our Vet, who we have a personal relationship with. I don't trust buying those online.

Heartgard and Nexguard. Maya also has a Seresto flea collar and Frontline topical since she is always at the park.

We use Interceptor Plus as well, with good results. I’d be cautious of Bravecta (and serestro), I think there is an ongoing class action lawsuit with those. I think the problem with the quarterly doses are that it’s too much in the bloodstream at the outset and it has been linked to health issues. Just something to consider. We use Vectra for flea/tick control…
