Doing a motorcycle trade in Florida?

Hey everyone......

There's a strong possibility I may be doing a trade later this evening.

Two of my motorcycles for another one.

I mentioned this in my Elsinore thread.

Anyway - I'm preparing a couple bills of sale ahead of time and will leave the amount sold for blank for now - but was wondering - since when I go to get the title transferred and the bike registered they ask the selling price - what do I say?

Am I supposed to make up a figure based on what we'd normally buy/sell these bikes for?

Thanks for any input! SmileWavy

I'm of no help in FL.
In WA if you trade vehicles of equal value no sales tax is paid.
In MN if you trade, each person pays tax on 'book' value so it's usually better for both to come up with a reasonable value to use.

OK thanks. I like how they do it in WA better. :)

Fla is a sales tax state but county and independent dealers sell tags & title transfers + collect taxes
but rules are lax sometimes they want a bill of sale with a price
one even demanded a notarized bill of sale with the price [ I went elsewhere]
seller is supposed to wright the price on the title in a space provided
and tear off the top of the title with price and buyers name and send to the state
BUT few do !!

btw a like value trade was tax exempt from sales taxes last time I checked here

I've bought and sold a car here in Fl in the past 2 years, and all I had to do was fill out a provided form stating price on one and on the other I had a bill of sale with a very low number on it (yes I got a smokin' deal on craigslist of all places). No questions or other info needed both times.

This was done at city hall here in my little town, since the nearest DMV/license office/tax collector office is 20 miles away the city hall is a sub-station/sub-agent. Can do everything that doesn't require a photo or finger prints (so no DL renewal or CCW permit cards provided), no waiting, and helpful as can be.

Thanks for the replies - looks like we aren't doing the trade. Other party wanted some cash on top of the two bikes and that's not happening.

More on the Elsinore thread.

And I intend to find out the deal on a trade and will report back what the state here says.
