Two different jokers. Can’t compare in my opinion.

Saw it yesterday...Great movie!
Anyone who appreciates Joaquins acting talent...should see the movie 'U Turn'
Oliver Stone movie 1997

I remember being dazzled by Jack Nicholson's Joker. Then Heath Ledger brought it to a different place and a level with his characterization. What a tragedy about Heath and that we'll never get a reprise or anything else from him again. For me, there was tremendous entertainment value in both of their portrayals. I like Joaquin Phoenix's acting (especially in Gladiatory) and thought he did a brilliant job in Joker. But OMG was a sad, negative, depressing movie. The problem for me is I found it non-entertaining. Watching a very sick guy mentally, let down by the system, circle the drain and lash out was not entertaining at all for me.

I had such high expectations of a Joker creation movie and went out on its first night in the theater. I don't regret seeing it, but I was profoundly disappointed. I had glanced to see some reviews were good without really reading them. After the movie, I looked more seriously at some reviews and my feelings were borne out. See this one from the NY Times. I don't think it's a spoiler:

I saw the trailers and thought, "This is going to be a REALLY well done movie that I'm not remotely interested in seeing." (and I love the super hero movies, whether it be Marvel or DC) It looked dark and disturbing and too real. I don't mind having a movie make me think, but this one just looked like it would be dark and involve thinking that would put me off of any entertainment value it may have.

I go to movies to be entertained, to escape life... etc.

exactly.

I forget who said it first. Maybe frank miller. But the idea was that the joker shouldn’t have an origin or a back story. He should be pure random nihilism.

Guess i’ll See the move eventually.

Which, I have to say, Heath Ledger did brilliantly. It was super unfortunate for him to go out when he did, but almost poetic (if you can assign that to a life cut too short) to have happened after his portrayal of the joker. That was definitely going out on a high note.

I haven't seen the movie, but based on the trailer, that's the impression that I have.

There are lots of theories about Heath Ledger's "Joker".

One that I think makes sense is that he's a damaged veteran. His scars are war wounds.

Saw it today. A very dark and disturbing movie, but we enjoyed it.

Batman meets the King Of Comedy and Taxi Driver. With a good measure of V for Vendetta thrown in. Of course Deniro is in KOF and TD also.

I can see why they are afraid this movie will set off an apocalyptic scenario...the social commentary is stunning.

Is the Joker really Donald Trump?

You have similar civil chaos going on right now in Hong Kong.

This is the story of a little guy that gets pushed around and is shuffled off and discarded by the system. Where society itself is economically deteriorating and people are getting tense under the pressure. So finally the Schmoe can't take it anymore and snaps killing his bully oppressors who happen to be swells. This causes a populist street uprising (Similar to ANTIFA) where people are mad as he11 and won't take anymore from the wealthy elites who are telling em to eat cake. .

Sound familiar...

This movie brought in 247M world wide this weekend...97M USA.. I suspect this is gong to be monster huge...It is going to resonate...

Let us see what it does second weekend...

The movie also addresses the bending of perceptions and what is unreal or fake and what is reality? At the end you really do not know, except for the bloody foot prints and the comedy of being chased.

Here is a scene for you:

Arthur goes and asks to see his mothers medical records, the clerk (bureaucrat is sympathetic and helpful a regular guy) but when he read how bad it was for Arthur he suddenly clams up leaving Arthur hanging/dangling emotionally. Leaving Arthur to grab the record to resolve the mystery of his life.

Everybody can understand and relate to that...it like the MD saying ahh ohh after reading your test results but won't tell you how bad what you got really is... not knowing is a killer. That connects the audience emotionally right to Arthurs plight. It is so human to want to know.

Neither.

The guys who did this one were not clueless.

I was passing by the theater after a buffet and was so full I needed a place to sit awhile. So I went in and saw the movie.

Varmint that cartoon nailed it. The MSM loves gore....

sc_rufctr 10-11-2019 08:00 PM

I'm seeing this in about 4 hours with my son and his GF...

sc_rufctr 10-12-2019 05:45 AM

OK So, it was different. I'm not sure I should recommend it.

(Maybe I'm getting old and jaded.)
It's a "beautifully crafted movie but it wasn't enjoyable" is probably the best way I can describe it.

Not a Hollywood ending and very dark. It must be horrible to suffer from a mental health issues.
Joaquin Phoenix did very well and the other supporting actors were all competent.

Finally caught it tonight.

The subject matter was not easy to pull off.

It could have gone sideways 100 different ways but it stayed on track and Jouqian gave a master class in acting.

Brilliant.

Shaun @ Tru6 10-18-2019 08:16 PM

^^^ the is the smartest review I've read. It could have so easily been so bad. But it was great from so many perspectives.

Really well said.
