Ads on Pelican

What is going on with increased ads and even full page pop up takeovers?

Yes I am logged in.

Seems to be Limited to desktop view on mobile for now.

Anyone else seeing this?

Ditto.

The little pop down ad on my iPhone is annoying.

javadog 11-03-2019 02:26 AM

Yeah, I started a thread about this the other day. Any way to prevent the goddamn things from popping up? I assume that pelican parts has initiated this and there’s nothing we can do about it but I thought I’d ask.

I'm on mobile, but keep JavaScript turned off...don't see 'em.

I'm getting that plus a full page takeover and I can't even tell what the hell it's supposed to be for.

I can learn to deal with the pop down but I never understood how anyone thinks full page takeovers do anything but piss people off and that it's OK to do that to viewers regardless of the revenue need which I get.

It's just obnoxious.

I don't browse pelican on my phone... However at home I haven't seen an add in months...

Put together a Pi-hole adds are gone...

Im going to try and set it up with my cloudflare mobile vpn and see how it affects the phone experience when i'm not on my home network..

Firefox + UBlock Origin + NoScript = no adds, and you can block other idiotic spam-elements like "trackbacks"

I aalso use FF with an adblock add on. No ads or popups.

KFC911 11-03-2019 07:04 AM

Just to reiterate....ya don't need a specific browser or "blocker".... just disable JavaScript on whatever you use. Poof...like magic!

And that is SO easy...just try it ;)

Steve Carlton 11-03-2019 07:08 AM

Is there a downside to disabling JavaScript?

Yep...I have to turn it on for Youtube and some other sites that depend on it...but I am pretty narrow in my web usage these daze.

No downside for Pelican forums....jmho.

How do those ads get there? Are all of those companies contacting Pelican directly and getting the ads out up? That seems unlikely, given the wide range of the ad subjects.

john70t 11-03-2019 08:34 AM

I'm guessing Pelican contracts with an ad distributor.
(without any sense of controls apparently)

There are normal ads.

And then there are not-normal ads, which disrupt positive browsing to intentionally create disfunction.

Spam forcing is usually counter-productive to consumer-comfort and potential business.

I know the owner of an OU site. He contacted Google to get ads to help offset costs but initially didn't get approved due to lack of traffic. A few months later Google contacted him and said it was a go and the ads started almost immediately.

Goggle now monitors threads with bots looking for key words and pictures they deem unsavory.

KFC911 11-03-2019 08:46 AM

I haven't peeked "behind the curtain" in years...but...

When you connect to Pelican, you are also connecting to Google servers...need I say more :(?

Plug n play ad networks.

About the simplest thing a site owner can do.

The more reputable networks won’t even talk to you until you’ve got 1m eyeballs a month.
