Dug a hole

Well, I didn't. In a rare fit of good sense, I hired it out. But Mike Mulligan let me drive his steam shovel for a bit.

Next week, we'll start filling the hole with garage.

Nice. Every kids dream, and most men are still closely in touch with their inner kid.

Very cool - would love it if you continue to share the build!

madcorgi 11-30-2019 09:27 AM

I'll be doing a build thread on Garage Journal.

Hah! Not everyone knows about Mike Mulligan and how he got his steam shovel out of the hole!

Be sure to link us up to your GJ thread so we can "critique" your build!

AWESOME!

Dimensions, please?

:D

And sometime you might drop by the basement of the town hall and visit Mike and Maryann.

Hmm. No exit strategy.

I keep thinking I "need" a backhoe or a mini excavator, but I'm afraid the wife would realize she now had the right tool to dispose of my miserable carcass. :D

Best
Les

so close - why not make it attached?

madcorgi 11-30-2019 01:24 PM

Main area is 24 x 34, with 14 foot ceilings. Bump out in back is 8 x 18, with an 8 foot ceiling. That area will be where the compressor, generator, blast cabinet, and welding booth will go.

Attaching it to the house would have created a morass of cost and permitting paperwork that I didn't want to get into. It will have a covered walkway to the house.

ah yes - permits...

you can build a slab I guess and that cover

then under cover of ... the cover... you can add on walls etc.

Yeah--with my deck, we made a few "adjustments" that were not per the plans. Figured I'd rather ask forgiveness than permission.

Overall, the City and I have had a decent relationship, but I still had to use an adult tone once or twice to get them to move and to quit adding ingredients to the stew. We are within about 80 feet of a natural stream, so they took the opportunity to declare it an environmentally sensitive area. I have to file a covenant in the land records and put up a split rail fence with a placard that says "Hey, look here! This is an environmentally sensitive area!" I also had to file a covenant that says "There's an airport over yonder!" In case they don't happen to notice the 747 Dreamlifter lining up for final approach to our west.

Ha - but you can't fault them for protecting natural resources; and it adds to your amenities

rusnak 11-30-2019 04:23 PM

Sweet! How are you heating it? I imagine the rollup door is insulated.

Crowbob 11-30-2019 04:49 PM

I hate it, I hate it!

LWJ 11-30-2019 04:56 PM

Very nice!

Also, mike mulligan was one of my favorites as a kid.

Keep us posted.

I haven't yet decided how I'll heat it. I'm looking at a warehouse heater of some kind.
Fortunately, Seattle does not get super cold (although it's cold tonight). The door will be insulated.

Current decision is whether to embed my scissor lift into the slab so it's flush with the floor, as has been done by this Pelicaner. https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1046287-scissor-lift-garage-floor-help.html
Now would definitely be the easiest time to do it, incorporating it into the slab pour, but I have so far resisted making any big decisions on equipment placement until I get a feel for how it will be.

This should be an easy decision, 14' celling = full size lift.

I love my scissor lift but if I had had the ceiling room, it would have been a full size.

24 x 34 ? 2 lifts..... 4 post and two post.

I'm moving from a 3-car, high ceiling (2 lifts) to a two car, low ceiling. I'm going to miss the lifts.
