^^ This. Every time I've driven someone else's car, it was at 8/10s or less.. Still great fun though.

Adding a post: I stopped driving at DE's when I realized that I couldn't afford to walk away from damage to my 911S, much less to myself. I usually drove Big Willow and speeds out of T9 with a spin often sent cars to the infield which was like rocky sand. A LOT of cars rolled when they went off in that manner. Seeing a couple on the trailer convinced me and I had no trailer.

Jack Olsen actually offered at one point for me to take the wheel of Black Beauty while he shotgunned. I might have done it for 3-4 laps at one time, but that time never really presented itself. IDK think I'd climb in now. Pretty sure about that. And I'm too old with bad vision now anyway.

Although Jack never drove my car, I let Tyson Schmidt drive the Ragamuffin at Willow. We had the same lap times.

This all goes back aways. I've been here a long time. I think this was '06. This is me me in the car I think the event after the time I just mentioned. I had better tires in this photo.

Turn 4 exit. I need to Photoshop that blue tape.

To answer the OP. No, not really. I might drive it at 90% and have some fun on track alone. No way would I really push hard in someone else's car. Maybe if they were billionaire best buddies and did not care about money or if I hurt the car.

I have done a few DEs and I told all the drivers I would let them by as soon as possible before we started the engines. I was out there to have fun in my street car, and I planned to drive it home to Oklahoma the next day, and I had no ego pushing me to stay ahead of them in track prepared cars or a car with twice my HP and brakes.

Friend went to a driver training event. He was the fastest attendee. He asked an instructor why the instructor was so much faster than he was. The instructor said, easy, it's not my car.

I drove Fishcop's early 911 (RS spec) at Brisbane raceway. Lots of runoff should I have got it wrong. I wasn't concerned. It was just like driving an overpowered go-cart

I have driven a friends race car twice, one of them being at the now defunct 13 hour race at VIR. I did not give it a second thought as we all wanted to finish as high as possible. The second time I was more careful, a second gen RX 7 at Road Atl. I was more careful in the RX 7

As long as I know the car is safe and properly maintained I will drive anything, anytime, anywhere.

I've turned down some good friends who wanted to drive my '82 911 on the street. It's all down-side risk, even if you once drove a Volkswagen 50 years ago.

Then again, my daughter, who is now almost 40, has had a '10 Mustang GT with a 5-speed as her DD. I taught her 20 years ago how to get going on a steep hill w/o rolling backwards in her then Ford Ranger. She really gets the concept of not abusing machinery and is cleared to go in the P-Car anytime.

I drive other people’s cars in American Endurance Racing events, and other people drive my car in those events too. This is a fairly common aspect of endurance racing. People are always looking for qualified drivers. “Qualified” in this case means someone who can wheel pretty well (laptimes), doesn’t make a habit of crashing, isn’t overly hard on the equipment, and has the means to compensate the owner if they bend the car. Compensating the owner in this case could be in the form of cash money, or in the form of work on the car itself.

With a correct understanding amongst the parties, these arrangements can be fun and rewarding for all.

I race with another team (besides my own) in ChampCar. I pride myself on taking care of the equipment and not making mistakes, which I believe grew out of years of DE. I raced with this other team at Sebring and Indy last year and was (?) suppose to race with them at COTA and Indy this year, but obviously that is up in the air at this point.

I don't try and set the fastest lap - I focus on consistent, quick laps and staying out of trouble. And I keep getting invited back...😉

This can be a tricky subject... I'd have a hard time being comfortable driving a car that I couldn't afford to write a check for. And with only a few exceptions, I'd have a hard time handing over the keys (or starter button) to my car to someone else...

Here's a really interesting race concept that intrigues me...:

https://www.highplainsraceway.com/pony-express-bracket-endurance-races/

You team up with a few racers and you each drive your own car in the event...

Whenever I've shared a friends car, we've always negotiated a purchase price before the event.
