Most fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd know the broad outlines of the band’s tragic 1977 plane crash: six people were killed, twenty survived, and the group’s world changed forever. But very little is known publicly about the specific injuries the survivors sustained or the treatments that allowed some of them to recover.

What follows is one of the rarest pieces of evidence from that period: previously unreleased hospital footage of guitarist Allen Collins, filmed at the University of Mississippi Medical Center only days after the crash.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's Allen Collins: Playing Guitar in the Hospital Days After the 1977 Plane Crash

Anyone have any thoughts on the bass line on this? It's Jaco Pastorius, and that's Pat Metheny on the guitar next to him.

(FWIW, I find the bass distracting, and I wonder if JM did, too?)

Sounded fine to me, Herr O. Love the electric guitar on Joni. And seeing the audience without their damn smart phones all out! Organic!

I want to thank God and my parents for giving me a life that included the great music of the 70's...I feel truly blessed to have lived during this time.

I also thought the bass line was a distraction. Hey Baz, A Hammond B3 is always a treat to hear.
A number of more old school rhythm and blues bands in The Pacific Northwest usually bring one
onto the stage !

Copy that, Serene.

Friend of mine recently built a studio on his property and has TWO of them! His GF has been playing keyboards and singing locally for many years and had a popular local band along with her late husband.

Check out the history of the one HB3......

2025 version of "Rock and Bird." I like it a lot.

I still love the 1990 version and like it better. What's your preference?

I've heard rock and bird so many times off The Caution Horses, so there's a familiarity. I like the alternative version though, maybe just not as much. HST, there's many CJ songs that don't take the first time or two and then suddenly I hear it again and just fall in love; Supernatural and Square Room come to mind. No reason the updated version of Rock and Bird couldn't worm it's way into my brain.
