What will be the next excuse?
 

I predict now that public officials have granted themselves the power to shut down commerce and lock people in their houses at will, this power will be used for increasingly less severe purposes. I predict the next use will be another overreaction to a disease new to the country (probably a flu strain on the order of bird flu or swine flu). Eventually it will be a bad flu season that has us all locked down. Someone will try to use it to stem a phantom crime wave. Get used to it. We are all subjects that can be ordered inside at the whims of our rulers.

I have heard "the next time" so much lately on the news. It's almost as though they want us to know they can do the same or worse with any virus.
I think they are looking forward to it.

Exactly. If we tolerate this, we might as well burn the Constitution.

I suspect the financial repercussions will be so severe that 1 no one will want to do this again and 2 if someone proposes doing this again, it'll be political suicide.

This already is the next excuse. Last fall those in power in CA ordered the power to millions shut off. They shut our power off for 3 days, even though we were in a low fire potential area with low wind speeds. We and thousands of others had to skip work and throw out a lot of food. So, yeah, this is the next excuse.

2021...The common cold shuts the country down for 6 months.
In other news...the streets are empty.

The next excuse "because we know what's best for you".

FYI Being a wimpy old man I have voluntarily isolated myself, but I will come out of isolation when I decide that it is safe for me to do so.

2022...Cold sores/herpes has shown to be growing quickly.
All males are being isolated from females for 6 months.
(face masks are only ok if locked on...with police control)

My guess is more lives will have "been saved" by people not driving than CV. --Average car death is 102 per DAY in the US. Furthermore, those deaths often are on the younger side. (Won't somebody think of the children!?)

Not in MN, apparently our death rate doubled on the roads last month. With hardly anyone on them, speeds are way up.

Pretty hard to die in a traffic jam going ten miles an hour...

Seriously. I can't speak for other places but Virginia and Maryland are not stopping people who are out on the roads or the streets. I am mission essential at my work and there are no cops stopping anyone. In fact, we have a lot more people on the road than a lockdown might indicate.

I heard in Bellingham Ma the Board of Health just announced anyone over 5 can not be out the house without a mask or you could face arrest. The talk of Boston morning radio this AM. This is whacked.

Yep, and they aren't even passing new laws to make this a crime. They're just declaring it. But it's for your own good. And it's good that government has taken this opportunity to untether itself from the protections that average citizens used to enjoy.

This has been a theme for quite a while even before the pandemic, and is getting stronger. Think helmets, seat belts, warning labels, the list goes on.
