Come on Canada!

Went walleye fishing on the Detroit River this weekend (yes, it's actually very clean). For those who don't know, the river is split down the middle for US and Canada. I bought my one day Canadian license ($23, which is about $0.30 US). Start fishing, and Windsor Police boat comes by. "Sorry, but our waterways are closed because of coronavirus. You'll have to go back to Michigan side."

I've considered having my credit card company cancel the transaction, but the last thing I need is for it to be flagged with border patrol. I have to cross the border for work on occasion, and they already interrogate me about the possibility of taking a Canadian's job away if they let me through.

Ontario had zero on their website about being closed, and I shouldn't have been allowed to purchase a license (the day before I went fishing).

Ok, rant over. :(

Wow, $23 Canadia money is only worth 30 cents?
That sux! ;)

Serial, I agree that doesn't make sense but I'd just shrug it off. Lots of that type of stuff going on and it'll drive us crazy if we let it.
Or crazier, that's prolly more accurate.

i personally think the Walleye is the best tasting of the fresh water fish.

Far enough, but we were jigging, so it was tough. :) I did catch a few, and it was very tasty. The good part was the Windsor Police boat shift ends at 5PM. ;)

Alright...I might have exaggerated slightly. ;)

Just send a email to Ministry of Natural Resources and they should get your money back, you are correct though the website shouldn't allow you to purchase from out of Canada at the moment, they are probably too lazy to change it, or out fishing.

Obviously a danger to yourself and others out fishing in the middle of nowhere by yourself.

Apology? Check. All is right in Canada . . .

I didn’t know that pickerel are the same as walleye.

This is sort of like them kicking the surfer guy out of the ocean off the coast of California.

Does this mean Canada is getting as bad as California, or is it the other way around?

911 Rod 05-20-2020 06:59 AM

As silly as it sounds, a border is a border.

craigster59 05-20-2020 07:04 AM

In California your license is good from 1/1/20-12/31/20. The trout opener for Eastern Sierra was extended out to 6/1, most beaches, lakes and rivers closed due to virus.

Do you think they are knocking 40-50% off of the license cost? Not on your life.

OK, I am curious as I honestly don't know. I assume the border is a magical line in the middle of the lake and the GPS coordinates tell you when you cross. How close will they let you get? Can you be 1/2 a mile from the border? Is that the shipping lane?

I assume there is a legit reason for getting a license from Canada. It the US side not the good fishing area?

911 Rod 05-20-2020 10:08 AM

I believe it is the law to have charts, paper or digital.
The maps on my fish finders will tell you exactly where you are.

GPS charts show it very well. The better fishing "structure" is well past this line, so it's clear when you are violating. There are some good locations close to shoreline near water intakes, so it's not a question if you were "on the line". You were clearly over it.

Good fishing area below:

True. But that wasn't his gripe. His gripe was that Canada took his money for a day license, then wouldn't allow him to actually utilize that which he paid for. Totally fine that they aren't allowing fishing. What was annoying was they accepted his payment in the first place. How tough would it have been to simply lock down the sale of one day fishing licenses until they reopen?

I'm with Sammy on this, though. While annoying, it's best to just suck it up and forget about it.
