well his dad was a commissioned officer.

It's not like you can simply "fire" an officer like that in the Navy, over a letter bout his son.
Who wrote the letter? also an officer? higher ranking?
To put it in perspective, The man commanded an Essex Class carrier, Bonne Homme richard few years before the Doors became a band.
So any time before or after the Doors.. He was already doing serious things in the Tonkin Gulf era..
Even if the would have told the writer of that letter to **** off.
At best he would have had a NJP at worst a court martial where the Navy would have first had to get over the fact that the writer of that letter, was already crossing boundaries himself. At worst he could have gotten a demotion of some kind, or a months salary and a dent in his career.
Considering he became a rear admiral, in charge of the Fleet at the time of the Tonking Bay incident.. I guess he did know how to write it in a slightly more subtle way.
