Washington Irving, a famous fiction writer, touched up his "Columbus" story, as he did most anything else I have read by him. And most people never take the time to find the truth; taking Irving's tall tales about Columbus at face value. Including Columbus in the meme given the real truth is questionable. However, Galileo, As then, so today, a scientific establishment of consensus which Galileo disagreed with. And the fact checkers indeed would have gone with the scientific establishment then, as today. If the meme only had Galileo, it would be a good meme. It should be thought provoking. The fact checkers of his day did indeed try to strike down any disagreement with the scientific community's consensus. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1624499923.jpg |

But, if I have wandered too far into PARF territory, please call me on it and I will hush up. Obligatory random picture: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1624573363.jpg |
It takes two tools to know the size of the earth: plumb lines, and rulers.
All known and in use well before Columbus. Columbus, for whatever reason, was argueing for a faulty number that would put India closer and justify his expedition. Without Columbuses erroneous calculations India was beyond sailing range to the west with the vessels of the day. The academic question was not one of flat vs round but one of how far. Columbus, was WRONG. One other thing to remember with history is that it is full of humans. Some instances "science" is fairly trustworthy, others, not so much. Because of where they got their funding and resources the scientists of Galileo's day created models confirming the purposes of those in power. As then, so today, and so tommorrow. We'll be just as laughable to future generations as Galileo's is to us. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1624583488.jpg |
