Actually...

Washington Irving, a famous fiction writer, touched up his "Columbus" story, as he did most anything else I have read by him.
And most people never take the time to find the truth; taking Irving's tall tales about Columbus at face value.
Including Columbus in the meme given the real truth is questionable.

However, Galileo,
As then, so today, a scientific establishment of consensus which Galileo disagreed with.
And the fact checkers indeed would have gone with the scientific establishment then, as today.
If the meme only had Galileo, it would be a good meme.
It should be thought provoking.
The fact checkers of his day did indeed try to strike down any disagreement with the scientific community's consensus.

True enough in terms of Columbus and the entire scope of what he did (he was one bad actor). But as to the theory of round vs flat earth, I think he deserves to be included in this meme (though in fact the theory wasn't really all that controversial at the time)

By "the scientific establishment then", don't you really mean the Catholic Church? They hardly based their position on any facts/scientific evidence, but rather their own erroneous interpretation of Scripture (and I say that as a devote Christian, though not a Catholic). And they were certainly aggressive in their censorship and the "cancel culture" of their time (e.g. the Spanish Inquisition).

But, if I have wandered too far into PARF territory, please call me on it and I will hush up.

Obligatory random picture:

It takes two tools to know the size of the earth: plumb lines, and rulers.
All known and in use well before Columbus.
Columbus, for whatever reason, was argueing for a faulty number that would put India closer and justify his expedition.
Without Columbuses erroneous calculations India was beyond sailing range to the west with the vessels of the day.
The academic question was not one of flat vs round but one of how far. Columbus, was WRONG.

One other thing to remember with history is that it is full of humans.
Some instances "science" is fairly trustworthy, others, not so much.
Because of where they got their funding and resources the scientists of Galileo's day created models confirming the purposes of those in power.
As then, so today, and so tommorrow.
We'll be just as laughable to future generations as Galileo's is to us.
