I don't think there are any digital cameras today with the range to capture detail in the dark side of the moon without blowing out the lit side or to capture detail in the lit side without the dark side being completely invisible (as well as surrounding stars). And the haze near the bright side is odd. the only time that you'd see that is from the haze of our atmosphere.

I once did a quick and dirty photoshop of two images to get something similar (but not nearly as well done)

It's actually a bad combination of 2 shots. One with the bright side of the moon over exposed to show the stars and dark side, and one with the bright side exposed better. I think I had my focus a bit soft, but I was too busy looking through the telescope to work too hard at using the camera.

This doesn't do what you see through a telescope justice, but if you didn't get to see it through a telescope, I guess it's better than nothing.
