My wife's grandparents were farmers in Ames, OK and they stayed and had some tough times, but still raised 5 kids. Many of the record hot days for Oklahoma still date to the 1930s. Image, the entire nation is in the midst of the depression, and then a horrible summer of wind and dust. it is 110 degrees outside, the windows have to stay mostly closed or the house fills with dirt. Then you have to light the stove in the kitchen to cook dinner. No electricity, so no fans, and the only water was by a hand pump, Outhouses only, no indoor facilities. Those that stayed were tough. My grandparents all lived in Oklahoma City so just the depression to fight through.

Loved it! Here is a pic of my shower. I had to heat up a large bucket of water on the wood or Coleman stove, carry it uphill to the shower (you can see the cabin roof to the lower left), climb a ladder, & dump it into a 15 gal. grease drum with a shower head & valve. If I had visitors, it was the ultimate treat for them.

He did have a generator that he ran for a few hours at a time to charge the batteries for the radios. He had the same shower setup. He said one year taking a cold shower he was yelling in pain from the cold water and some campers over a mile away heard him and came to see if he was OK. He said after that at parties people often said that sounds great, a remote cabin in the woods.
