During WWII, 263 U.S. Navy submarines deployed on war patrols. This image of 52 submarines in the Pacific Reserve Fleet at Mare Island in 1946 represents the same number of subs that went on eternal patrol after being lost in the war.

This sign along Route 66 in 1934 was a mile east of "Ashfork," Arizona (Ash Fork) to let motorists know the distance to the towns west on Route 66 and how far Phoenix and other points south were on Arizona US 89 from that junction. Of course, I-17 would not be built for some time to Phoenix and points south at that point.

Here is a 1938 photo of the Arizona state line and old Route 66 looking west with the "Arizona Welcomes You" sign. We particularly like the other sign, "Open Range Look Out For Cattle." That would have made driving Route 66 a little added challenge in those days. This photo is courtesy of the Arizona State Library.
