Many years ago the port of entry in New Mexico used to put a stick in your fuel tanks, measure volume,
ask where you were going, calculate the miles, then tax you on the remainder of the fuel you already paid tax on in what ever state that was.
I think it was Consolidated Freightways or P.I.E. (Pacific Interstate Express) that sued them and ended it.

p.s. I'm glad I didn't see that when my wife was standing nearby. It would have made a long conversation about what kind things are on Pelican... That one had more than I cared to see. Just sayin
