The photograph—taken toward the northwest—was secured from atop a railroad car, and a railroad turntable is observed over to the right. A Union infantry regiment’s camp (3rd Corps) is depicted upon the knoll. Culpeper C.H. is over to the right, out-of-sight, and Pony Mountain (as soldiers called it) is straight ahead. Through the haze of smoking camp fires, Clark’s Mountain can be observed over to the far left.” — Clark B. After giving up English and spending a year in Europe, Michael returned to Boston, Massachusetts, and attended Harvard Medical School to train as a doctor. Several times, he was persuaded not to quit the course but did so after qualifying in 1969. During his medical-student days, he wrote novels secretly mainly under the pseudonym of John Lange in reference to his almost 6ft 9 height. (Lange in German means long) One novel, "A Case of Need," written under the pseudonym Jeffery Hudson, (Sir Jeffrey Hudson was a famous 17th century dwarf) contained references to people at Harvard Medical School, but he couldn't hide his identity when the novel won an award that had to be collected in person. After giving up medicine, Crichton moved to Hollywood, California, in the early 1970s and began directing movies based on his books, his first big break being "Westworld" (1973). Crichton became inspired to write this film after a trip to Disneyland, where he saw the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, and was impressed by the animatronic characters. Furthermore, the ride is mentioned in Crichton's "Jurassic Park" (1993), when Malcolm says "When the Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists," unlike what happens in this film. The first use of computer digitized images as part of a feature film (not merely monitor graphics) was the Gunslinger's point of view in this film. After the process was finally developed enough to produce satisfactory results, it took eight hours to produce each ten seconds of footage for the Gunslinger's pixelated POV. Yul Brynner was suffering from financial difficulties by the early 1970s and in desperate need of money. With no other movie work on offer to him at the time he reluctantly agreed to play his role as the Gunslinger in this film for $75,000. Director John Carpenter based the "indestructable" nature of his killer Michael Myers in "Halloween" (1978) on Brynner's character. Similarly, Arnold Schwarzenegger used Brynner's performance as the basis of his performance in "The Terminator" (1984). October 21, 1797–The 44-gun 204 foot frigate, USS Constitution, one of the six original Frigates of the US Navy and the oldest commissioned warship still afloat in the world, was launched in Boston’s harbor. It was never defeated in 42 battles. In 1997, 216 crew members set sail again to celebrate her 200th birthday. Although her construction is almost halted by a 1796 peace treaty with Algiers, the CONSTITUTION is launched (in the third attempt to get her in the water) and christened by visiting Capt. James Sever using a bottle of Madeira. She was constructed from hard, heavy, straight-grained, and decay-resistant white oak. Unlike the rather short and gnarled live oak, white oak trees grow to 150' tall to provide long, clear planks. When Old Ironsides was being built, white oak was plentiful throughout the Union's 13 states. Today, at Naval Support Activity Crane, near Bloomington, Indiana the US Navy maintains "Constitution Grove," where a forest of white oaks are grown for the sole purpose of restoring and refitting the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned vessel still sailing (the UK's HMS Victory is older, but remains in drydock). NAS Crane and Constitution Grove therein, protects the white oak trees and also the biological diversity an oak forest provides, including the wildlife that live there. Three Navy civilian foresters help maintain the wood and ensure that no tree removed from the ecosystem will have an adverse effect on the grove's biodiversity. It was in the great naval battle where the USS Constitution captured the 38 gun British Frigate HMS Guerriere (pictured below) that she was given her nickname of, "Old Ironsides". A sailor on the Guerriere saw 18-pound British cannonballs bouncing right off the hull of the Constitution. He exclaimed, "Huzza, her sides are made of iron!" http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1666788769.jpg The second battle of Cabin Creek. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1666788769.jpg Pipeline Rider - This photo from the mid 1910’s shows motorcyclist Johnny Hogg and his wife riding on an aqueduct pipeline with a Harley-Davidson sidecar rig. The pipeline ran about 15 miles through Los Angeles’ Mint Canyon. Mere days after this stunt was completed, another daring rider on a solo machine attempted the same stunt and found himself in the hospital. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1666788769.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1666788769.jpg Archelon, an ancient sea turtle http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1666788769.jpg The Ute Pass Trail originated just below the springs of Manitou, Colorado, through Ute Pass and into the White River country of Utah. With the Indians dragging their travois along this trail, the route became easier to follow and eventually became a safe route to the Colorado gold fields. Starting in 1860, the mineral rushes to Colorado resulted in large settler migrations that began the first major threat to the Ute way of life.
