Night diving in deep water off the coast of Tahiti, #WPYAlumni Fabien Michenet was surrounded by a mass of tiny planktonic animals.
Just three centimeters long, this juvenile sharpear enope squid was floating motionless about 20 meters below the surface. It was probably hunting even smaller creatures that had migrated up to feed under cover of darkness.

In 1899, police gave out the first automobile speeding citation in U.S. history—to a New York City cab driver who was traveling 12 miles per hour.

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle from Sunday, May 21, 1899 reports, "Bicycle Roundsman Schuessler saw German making twelve miles an hour on Lexington Avenue early last evening ... pursuing the man he saw him round the corner of Twenty-third street, an always crowded place, at the same break neck speed."

German was arrested and locked up for the night, and according to the newspaper report, both he and the electric cab company he worked for were "surprised."

Computer Tape Quality Control (1958)
A battery of automatic machines at Audio Devices, Inc., New York, makes 100% inspection of magnetic tape intended for use on computers, data processors, instrumentation recorders, etc. Several million pulses are recorded on each reel of tape; if even a single pulse fails to reproduce properly for a tape under test, the machine automatically stops and signals the operator, and the reel is rejected for computer use.

Workers attach the mighty R-2800 Double Wasp engine to an F4U Corsair at the Vought factory in Stratford Connecticut, 1943.
The XF4U-1 prototype was the very first aircraft to be designed around the Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine. This beast of an engine was the heart of the F4U.
With 2,800 cubic inches (46 litres) of displacement and 18 cylinders, this mammoth put down over 1,800 hp. The engine spun a large 13 feet 4 inches (4.06 m) propeller.
On October 1, 1940, the XF4U was the first single-engine US fighter to exceed 400 mph. Not only was she fast in a straight line but also in a dive too, attaining speeds of up to 550 mph.
