On August 17, 1957, Alice Roth experiences what surely is one of the worst days any spectator has had at a Major League Baseball game. After being struck by a foul ball off the bat of future Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn, Roth is being treated for a broken nose when the Philadelphia Phillies' star fouls off the very next pitch, hitting her in the leg and breaking it. The incredibly unlikely incident is unique in baseball history.

Neat stuff.

Not really random photos. My car at Barber Motorsports about to do a DE. It is a fun track, and nicknamed the Augusta of race tracks. Artwork everywhere, manicured lawns, and bushes. For my antique 1985 911 is was perfect, get into third after turn one, and stay in third. Down to 3,500 RPM, and run to redline (90) and hit the brakes for the turn. I was the only air cooled car that that day. Lots of people commented how cool it was to see an old air cooled 911 on the track. I was not remotely as fast as the modern Porsches on track that have over double the HP, and every computer advance possible. But I had as much fun as anyone else.

Sheesh, I think Alice needed to see a doctor about her brittle bones. A broken nose from a baseball, I can see, but a broken leg seem a bit crazy.

Ow!

A wagon train following the California Trail across Nevada during the 1860's. The Bartleson-Bidwell Party were the first wagon train to take the California Trail across Nevada in 1841. By 1869 there had been an estimated 450,000 people who had taken a covered wagon along the California Trail in Nevada. The 40 mile desert between Lovelock, and Fernley was the worst part of that trail because there was no water. In Fallon during the 1930's you could still find a lot of debris from the wagon trains that had crossed that stretch of desert.
