Soplata Airplane Sanctuary (Ohio)
https://architecturalafterlife.com/2019/03/airplane-sanctuary/
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1616091268.jpg
Quote:

Walter Soplata is a name well-known amongst aviation enthusiasts. Soplata grew up in Ohio raised by Czech immigrants. Throughout his childhood, Soplata had become fascinated by airplanes. As his fascination grew well into the Great Depression, he would put together any money he could find to buy and build balsa model aircraft. Soplata was disqualified from joining the military during World War II due to a stutter, but he found a way to work with something he loved, and took a job at a Cleveland scrapyard. In this scrapyard, Soplata would scrap thousands of warplane engines as they became declared surplus. Seeing an end coming to the history of these beautiful aircraft, he decided to start a collection to save their stories for future generations. He began buying planes before they went to be totally scrapped.

Quote:

The place is called following the name of an aviation enthusiast. In fact, Walter Soplata is a scrap collector in Newbury, Ohio, USA. He had purchased and collected the warbirds of World War II with an intention to help the aircraft from being dismantled or abandoned.

However, after his death in 2010, those airplanes were forgotten, rusted in the bushes, and turned into real waste. In total, the graveyard has about 50 rusted bodies of aircraft and 30 old engines.

You can read more about the story of the Soplata Airplane Sanctuary directly from Wally Soplata, the son of Walter Soplata.

Driving on the left, a fair amount of cranes in the background so one of the busier UK cities, not the dreary northern ghost towns. I would say Shoreditch maybe or near Docklands London?

Aren't those hanging backwards from normal?

john70t 03-19-2021 09:50 AM

That's a possibility. London iirc. I just repost 'em.
It's a modern photo but the result is kinda cool.

I occasionally see a lifted Jeep with this same "nuts" setup on it's hitch on my commute.

The only better setup I've seen was last weekend - a lifted Cummins Dodge had a pair of pistons hanging by the connecting rods (sorry , no photo - I'm poorly setup while driving).

A couple years ago I saw that same Jeep get the "death wobbles" going about 40 MPH - it was violently taking up both lanes of a narrow road.

That just reinforced my bias that I don't want a Jeep.
