What cars do you wish you could own again?

We've all had probably 30+ cars come and go over the years. Which cars do you wish you could own again? There are a lot I've had that it would be nice or fun to have again but don't ever really think about them, cars like a '74 Dasher wagon or Audi GT. Nice to remember, don't ever think about getting another. Cars I want to get again, someday:

Any year Datsun 240Z, definitely highest on the list of cars gone by, can be more fun than an early 911 at times.

'63 VW Crew-cab pick-up, first drivable car I bought, $275, sold for $450, great for slowing life down lumbering about.

'69 911E, only car I've truly regretted selling. Have a '76 shell to recreate it but that's years away.

I'd still have it if I wasn't forced into a ditch by a lady on her cell phone.

I have had many Datsun Z cars over the years when you could buy good parts cars for $400. The one I wish I had back was an early 1971 240Z still with the original hub caps. This car was low mileage, and ran well, no rust, but finances dictated that I needed to sell it.

I tend not to sell cars I like. I also keep some I don't really like...

But my '89 Taurus SHO was a fun reliable family car, and it's long gone.

I couldn't really afford it at the time, but I'd love to have my old '88 in well maintained shape.

I might also like to have a '65 Impala 2 dr as a "toy", but not exactly the one that I used to have (was my first car, probably not much left of it by now due to rust in the last 35 years).

Since 1974 I have only owned 3 cars. I still have two of them. The only one I have sold in those years was my 1974 914 2.0 that I special ordered to be my dream car. I will admit I wanted a 911, but the 911 was just out of my reach financially. I drove this 914 for 22 years. For 18 years is was my only car, so it was my daily driver. It never had a garage for its first 7 years. so it had to sit outside.

I sold it because I don't have the garage space for 4 cars, and I just can't see spending the money on a storage space for a car that would be driven very infrequently.

Still part of me wishes I could have that car back.

I had a white 1987 cabriolet I wish I had now.

I had a few I with I kept longer, like the John Oates '84 911, and the 964 cup car.

My brother bought a 1974 VW Westfallia Camper back in 1976. After 44 years and many engine rebuilds that he can do himself, he does not remember how many times the speedometer has turned over so it might be 300,000+ or 400,000 miles+. He recently was driving it, and it was missing on one cylinder when cornering. He got home, and started looking. The power wire from the coil was loose. He started checking it, and found a repair he had done while camping. The fuse for that wire was "fixed" with a piece of aluminum gum wrapper and a Band-Aid. By the time he got home from that trip he forgot the repair. After many long years, it was having issues. So he fixed it properly with a new fuse holder and fuse. So a piece of gum wrapper repair does have about a 10 year life as a repair.

The 105 Alfa Romeo. I bought one when I was 21 and sold it 9 years later.
Great car and bags of fun. Better than the newer Alfa Romeo GTV IMO.

(Not my car)

There are 2 categories for me for what I'd like back: drivers and collectors. As a collector, my first car, a '57 Corvette, would top the list. Not a great car to drive, but fun nevertheless. Money no object, I'd probably look around at other Corvettes I've had like the black '65 big block coupe. That's a driver, too.

As a driver, I think I'd be good with tooling around town (no freeways) in my '50 MG TD. I might cheat on that one and get a TC or TA. I like to look at those a lot.

Other than that, give me a 10 YO Chevy truck and I'll be on my way. All my Chevy PU's have been a favorite but the newer they are, the better they are to drive.

Edit: Speaking of Chevy trucks, the front crossmember on the C1 Corvettes was the same as used on Chevy PU's and sedans (from before WWII?) and on the PU's from about 1949 when the truck went from an I beam to IRS in front. This lasted until the last C1 in '62. Solid live rear axle and that old 200 lb front end ass'y — no wonder the Corvette drove like a truck. It was the same thing with a fiberglass body on top.

We need one more gum wrapper life expectancy data point and I would say we have a bankable statistical mass.

For me, I want my 78 Westy back. Bought it in Anchorage in 89 or 90 for $1,800. 2nd kid came along a year later and had no time. It was the coolest thing. A touch chilly in the winter. Yellow/orange color with the green plaid seats.
