Tamiya 1/12 Jagermeister Porsche 934 build

I've had this kit for a while and never got around to working on it. I'm going to try and build this thing to the best of my ability and as close as I can to the real thing. If some of you can offer advice, it would be most appreciated.

I'm considering buying an airbrush to paint the body and chassis, although I do have the Tamiya orange lacquer in a spray can.

Basic engine assembly together, testing fit of parts.

fitting cooling shroud, paint test on valve covers.

testing fit of intercooler/throttle stacks

paint detail work. I managed to get a pretty good representation of the cast valve covers. Decided to do them all this way.

fan drive and alternator test fit

Making spark plug leads

paint detail work on intercoolers. I'll do them all this way.

Turbo and CIS unit test fit.

Mocked the body up for fun..

These are beautiful kits. I grew up building model cars and still have a couple of dozen unbuilt kits, including the Martini 935, waiting for me (I haven't built anything in years but I'll make time for it again one day). When I was in the 6th grade my carpool driver accidentally ran over my leg (oops) and gave me a 1/12 Otaki '74 Carrera RS as part of her feel-better gift. Built that, and later a 356C and 911 Carrera Targa from Fujimi in 1/24. I did build the ground-effects-era 1/12 Renault F1 car when I was in high school. The big Tamiya kits are good enough that they reward some extra attention to detail. Your power train looks good so far!

I have lusted after that model since the late 1970s when it first came out. I bought the pre-built RC version of it a couple years ago:

There ought to be plenty of 934 pics available, in books and on the net. You might want to see what you can find, so you get the finishes correct. I like what you have done so far, some weathering would be nice. I'd probably take the time to use real rubber hoses on some of the plumbing, like on the intercooler piping. You can also get a bunch of 1/12 scale detailing parts. Hose clamps, nuts and bolts, might as well use what you can. I'd definitely suggest an airbrush, if not for the body painting, for the details and weathering. You might want to paint the body now, so you can let the paint cure for a good long while, then polish it. There are also a myriad of paint colors for replicating different metal types; those can make a big difference.

JR

Couple sample pics, to get you started:

The large scale Tamiya kits are incredible. I've built a number of them, including this one. I'm currently building a Williams F1, that I've been working on for about a decade or so. One day i'll actually finish it.

Really cool. I've got this kit (and a few dozen others, but the rest are 1:24) squirreled away in a closet. If my 1:1 scale builds and projects ever let up, I might start on them.

What did you do to get the realistic finish on the valve covers?

After seeing this post and lusting after the kit I found one on eBay and am waiting for it to cross the pacific.
I havn't built a model since I was a kid i'm nearly 60 now and blame you for tempting me back into this!
Please post more of your build and any tips you have on finishes.
A list of supplies needed would be a great help too!

Im thinking of buying a 1/24 scale kit to practice on before moving up to the bigger kit!

Cheers
Bill

I bought all the paints listed in the instructions, Tamiya acrylics. I also bought a few bottles of isopropyl alcohol to thin them with. I cant find the link off hand, but I downloaded the instructions from Tamiya's website. Got a killer deal on the kit because it was missing the instructions.

I've been swamped with work stuff, so no free time to devote to building. Hopefully in a week or two.

I'd never worked with acrylics before. I'm just used to enamels. I'd get one of those trays with mulitple mixing bowls and a pipette then experiment with thinning the paint. I'm doing a 70/30 paint>alcohol ratio right now. The alcohol in the paint will evaporate as well, so cover the jars when not using (learned this the hard way).

Here's a picture of my work area. Nothing fancy, but the combination light/magnifying glass has been essential. Got it on Amazon for like $10.

And a small update. got the ignition leads attached, the water pump assembly fitted with some minor detail work.

I played around with different ratios of paint to alcohol, then applied it in a sort of camouflage pattern. I stumbled onto the idea with another piece that didn't dry smooth. trying to "level" the paint with alcohol left different patterns.

Imagine what these companies did before CG? All the plans where hand drafted - parts designed, molds made (not cheap). Models are awesome!

What amazes me is that there's a program out there, very similar to Solidworks/CAD packages that allow you to build something using the Lego parts database in 3D. You then send those plans to Lego and they send you the set. I would have KILLED for that as a child.

This must be some sort of "syndrome". I have this same kit and have even thought of building it and starting a thread just like this...
