Anyone replace the “valve cover gasket” on a VW Tiguan type engine?
Still trying to diagnose where the oil is leaking from, but I suspect it’s from the “valve cover”. Several years ago, I noticed oil in the spark plug wells. Now it’s dripping on the ground....a 5-6” puddle in just over an hour.
It’s not your typical valve cover from what I’ve read, but it also hold the upper half of the cam towers. Timing chains might be an issue as well. So, anyone have experience replacing the o-ring/gasket on this type 4 cylinder engine? Any tips? They use a special green gasket maker. The top half holds the journals to the cams. Cams stay in. Need a cam lock. Look up the block to see where the leak is coming from to confirm bc the valve cover is a dumb repair... |
Haven’t found the leak yet, but there are three areas I need to look at closer:
PCV valve - easy to fix. Timing chain cover and associated parts. Looks easy to fix. “Valve cover” seal. It’s been a long time since I’ve been inside an engine, but after watching how to videos, I didn’t see a cam lock used. Maybe it was their lucky day, but if you don’t rotate the engine/chains/cam/etc. it seems you could lift the cover and and replace. |
I am sorry that I read this thread too late. But, Have you replace the upper timing chain cover? (is the plastic cover to the side) I had the same issue you have and I replaced the gasket for this cover and for the variator solenoid as well, the gaskets were too harden and passing oil all over the cover.

Also look at the vacuum pump. My parents have 2 of these cars and both upper timing cover gaskets and both vacuum pumps were leaking at 90k. Upper timing cover gasket would be a 1/10 in terms of difficulty but the engine mount is in the way making access to the lower bolts a pain.

Make sure your leak is not from the rear main seal. That’s a thing on these motors. Caused by a failure of the pcv / oil separator on top of the head. Happened on my wife’s Passat at about 125k miles.

False alarm. After looking at it some more, the morons at jiffy lube left the oil filter loose.
It’s our daughters car and this is why I change my own oil. |

That picture of the top of the valvecover gave me a migraine..c'mon VW get your krap together. I hope there is some recourse for you in regards to Jiffy Lube offering some compensation |
