Stoeger Coach Gun
 

I like the looks of this gun. But, is it good for anything? I don't own a stage coach so no one sitting shotgun. Are they useful today for anything other than pointing down a hall way with 00 or a slug?

Do these guns have any practice uses? Skeet, trap, can you practically hunt with them?

First I have heard of the Coach Gun.

I did a quick search and the applications seem to run the gamut. I'm not in the market or I would take a deeper dive.

I have a Stoeger o/u .410 that is a great piece of gear. I bought it over 20 years ago to hunt on farm and teach my kids how to shoot.

It's a cowboy action shooting gun.

You can ride shotgun in a car.

Some upland bird hunters prefer side by sides for shooting pheasants or grouse because they can sight down each barrel directly and not have to make an adjustment for the second shot like on an over-under. Maybe it would be a good skeet gun where the second barrel comes into play each shot. Is it too short to be useful for birds or skeet?

I want that over and under. They have a tactical side by side as well. Very affordable.

The first gun is pretty handy for sitting in the front porch waiting for her date to bring her home at no later than 9:30.

Without a choke, you'd need to put the skeet in a barrel :cool:

Interesting perspective concerning sxs versus o/u: I do best with o/u, always have. My son, Jack, a much better shot at skeet than I will ever be, prefers sxs.

He takes the Virginia Bar Tuesday and Wednesday, comes home Thursday to gather his stuff for the move.

There are a lot of other good shotguns for defensive work that are cheap as well. I just have a knuckle bustin win 97 solid frame riot...The clack clack racking of that thing is sure to instill the fear of GAwd into anybody.

Lots of people are into Double guns..where the sky is the limit on valuation.

Years ago a friend took me over to a purveyor of doubles, Ivory Beads in Covina, CA. We were sitting in the gun room sipping on some Scotch and smoking cigars when one of the partners went into the back room and brought out 4 doubles putting them down on the table. Those 4 guns represented 500K. Three Parkers and a Fox.

One of the partners said that he knew about and was after one of the Parker's for 35 years. When finally it walked in the door and he was able to buy it for himself.

I watched a number of the Ytube vids before posting but nothing that indicated any practical uses for a coach gun other than self defense. I figured as much but though I would ask.

The other shotgun I have my eye on is a Mossberg Flex.

Yup, these "coach guns" are more for the Cowboy Action Shooting set than anyone else. Having only two shots makes them a poor choice for home defense.

Doubles do make fantastic hunting shotguns, though. I prefer a side by side to an over-under. The wide sighting plane makes it a good deal easier for me to hit on those really fast snap shots on pheasant and grouse. Not so great as waterfowl guns, since they tend to be light, and therefor kick like a mule with heavy loads. I just use a schitty old pump for that, something where I don't care if it gets wet or even goes underwater in the bottom of the boat. Doubles are upland guns.

My current doubles include a really sweet little CZ USA 12 gauge and a muzzle loading 10 gauge. The 10 is actually an 11 gauge, with the barrels bored to accept modern 10 gauge wads that would normally be loaded in a shell. It's choked cylinder and improved cylinder, since it does have to be loaded past those chokes, and any real constriction would make that impossible.

And I am far from an expert on shotguns, but slugs would not be my choice in a shotgun for home defense. A slug with go right through any human, and through the wall and on into the next room.

i think a double gun would make a decent defense gun. it only needs ejectors. i can load so fast on a departing quail.

00 buck doesn't "spread" far at self defense distances (9 .30 pellets in the shape of a football). Mo' better than snails :D

no. you release the trigger and it resets on the second barrel.

It looks like the Coach Gun has two triggers. Both of my doubles have two triggers, which I very much prefer, but probably because I grew up shooting that way.

My son's over/under Weatherby has a single trigger that is selective. Depending on which way the tang safety is arranged, it can be made to shoot the top barrel first or the bottom barrel first. I have no idea what the advantages of being able to make this switch might be.

Side by sides traditionally fire the right barrel first. The right barrel will have the more open choke. I keep and improved cylinder in the right barrel of the CZ, and a modified in the left barrel.

Stoeger makes the Coash Gun in a single and double trigger. Depends on your preference.

I think they make (or at one time made) a version with hammers as well. I tell you, cocking hammers on that muzzle loader as birds are flushing certainly adds to the "challenge"...

On second look, I see the two triggers in the second pic....now where are the hammers hiding :D?

I gave my only double shotspoon to a relative...it had hammers.... made in 1890 or so.

Driven birds. You want the tighter chocked barrel first...just the opposite of upland shooting. Two triggers let you choose as well.

I find this shotgun very appealing, but the cost of a stagecoach makes it a bit pricey.

My grandfather gave his son (my uncle) his Parker, and somewhere along the line my uncle sold it, and his father was pissed. He promised me his Belgian made 20ga Browning Superposed for when I turned 16 and I got it (almost 50 years ago). I still have that gun, which is beautiful.
