7 years to build? I wouldn't have the patience at any time in my life. Today that's longer than I'm likely to live. Guess I better not start a 150M house.

it's not 'a house' of course. - it's a compound. Sections get built... added...

Some Perspective

The article is from 2015, so some of the numbers may have changed a bit, but think about this. Bill Gates spent 0.19% of his net worth on this house. To put that in perspective, if your net worth is $1 million, the equivalent cost to you would be $1,894. If your net worth is $10 million, make that $18,939. He probably used his petty cash account to fund the house.

I saw it being built when on a boat - I thought it was a shopping center until somebody corrected me...

It is definitely low impact for its size, and has a very nice garage for his very nice collection.

For those on the West Coast, there is the https://hearstcastle.org/ tour. Quite a place, but probably more so back in the day when filled with antiquities. The workmanship in some areas seemed a bit sub-par for all the money and time poured into it.

In San Jose there is also the gun heiress house featured in the https://winchestermysteryhouse.com/winchester-movie/ which was a bit grade c.

A tour of the creepy 24,000-square-foot Winchester mansion in California - Insider After 38 years of construction, with stairs to nowhere and doors that open onto walls, some say the Winchester mansion was built to trap ghosts.

Yea, when one can buy an original Leonardo da Vinc manuscript for 30 million just because you want it, you have all the money needed to live comfortably.

I thought I read today that the CEO of Oracle is moving out of California to one of the HI islands he owns 90% of. The money is sickening.

Larry owns 98% of Lanai.

Very interesting place to visit. I choose to take the island tour and we were driven around by a local woman who's family had lived there for generations. After Dole pulled out the island was slowly dying to the point that they were months away from leaving for good, when Ellison bought damn near everything.

The people thought for sure he would kick everyone out and keep it as his own, but he dumped tons of money into the island, brought in housing, gave money to help develop more tourism (lifeblood) and basically paid to keep the island just the way it was. There is good information that in doing so, it costs him $30+ million a year to do so.

While that may seem insane, apparently he loves it just the way it is, and think of it this way, if Ellison never made another cent and continued to fund the island at $30 mil/year, he would run out of money in 2500 years!!!!!:eek::eek:

Very cool house but I'm pretty sure that video is not of Gate's car collection.

I thought that he was giving away all of his money to lessen global income inequity. I am waiting for him to offer to mitigate the inequality between his cars and mine.

Always seemed a bit dorky to be a serious car guy who would drive and flog his stuff appropriately.

Probably, but his famous mugshot from 1977 was apparently for speeding in his Porsche in NM. There are conflicting accounts though that the arrest was for not having a license and running a stop sign.
