California reissuing Vintage Plates

Anyone in California who wants a retro plate for their classic, the DMV is planning to create a 'Legacy Plate' that can be pre-oredered now.... they need 7500 pre-orders before plates will be issued, so I'm hoping to spread the word and accelerate the process.

CA Legacy Plates

Since they will have to be reflectorized, I'm guessing they won't really look anything like the vintage plates. However, if it relieves some of the pressure in the YOM plate market, that's fine by me.

Might crush that market as now duplicate numbers will be possible.

You've been able to YOM black plates for a few years now.

True. But if they're only charging $50 for these, I'm pleasantly surprised.

Who says that they'll have to be reflectorised?

cal.gov.

They took the bait from 3M that it was a safety measure and that all cars should have a reflectorized plate to be safer.

3M also tried to get ALL orange, Black or Blue vintage plates off the streets a few years back I try not to buy anything from them

If you can get YOM plates registered that you bought, they only have to be in very good condition or restored. I have not seen any reflector paint on yellow or black plates.

Zeke,

I think you are right. The code section is 5201. It discusses electronic means of detection but does not specifically mention a "reflective" coating. Others on the board may know more on this.

Being reflectorized has nothing to do with safety, it has to do with forcing you to put a target on the front of your car for laser speed guns and of course, revenue.

Wanna see my surprised look?

Technically, it's illegal to alter a CA license plate in any way...even just restoring it back to original condition. Not that it really stops anybody from doing it though...

The new '63-'69 black/yellow CA "legacy" plates have a different letter/number sequence from the originals. Unless you create your own vanity plate, all the new randomly-assigned legacy plates have seven digits in place of the original six. People who are interested in such details will still use actual YOM vintage plates on their old cars instead of these new ones.

Although CA's legacy plate program was initially created for vintage car owners who wanted a more period-correct looking license plate, the vast majority of these are seen on modern vehicles. Lots of folks seem willing to pay an extra fee each year simply to have a black/yellow seven-digit plate on their ride in place of the current white ones.

It's true. And I see this as a desire to return to better times, or times that you thought were better. We did get a set of black plates, personalized, for the '44 Jeep. It looks much better than a modern white plate, even personalized. However, for my black PU, I wouldn't bother with either.

That's something I don't get. A lot of people (with late model cars) are vain enough to pay extra for a black and yellow plate, but not vain (creative?) enough to think up a personalized series of 7 letters/numbers? Is it yet another fee (on top of the one to get the black plates) to personalize what the license plate says? I thought it was the same cost for personalized vs random digits on a black plate, though admittedly I haven't cared enough to actually look it up. Or maybe I'm just a cheapskate.
