We still haven't matched this

even with an exoskeleton, the wings have a lot of ability to rotate and flex for flight performance...

I was curious about this guy and where he came from (I guessed Duke - a notorious hotspot for biomechanics) but I wuz wrong...

He's a bug pheromone guy

You'd be surprised.

We are on contract with the Navy for "morphing" wing technology...and other companies are working hard as well.

Screen shot:

We have millions of control cycles without any failures. We fly a small UAS that is completely MFC controlled.

Our next UAS design is a UAS that is stored in a canister and is flown to a drop point on the wing of a jet. Once deployed, it unfolds. It will be 100% MFC.

WOW. Do you have piezo accuators that can put out the force to move against the air flow over a wing?

Up to a certain size of the control surface, yes. And we run at less than 12 volts to make it work.

The other interesting thing is that the control surfaces can be put where they should be, not where to have to be to work mechanically. We are currently targeting UAS 1000lbs and below.

It is really fun to watch.

I am sure you know, but the Wright Brother "warped" their wings for control. No ailerons, etc.

yes, there is a lot of R&D but nothing that matches insects yet

a bit of an unfair adv. since insects as well as bats & birds, are much smaller than most aircraft, except for certain drones in R&D

No question at all - but we steal as much as we can, we really do, from bugs. Like helicopters, they really should not be able to fly.

My partner is a Stanford MS in Aero and Aero Modelling, the brains of the outfit.

Material sciences have really helped realize goals that 10 to 20 years ago were unobtainable in UAS, sensors as well.

The key is and will remain: How do I gather the data, to what degree and have it become actionable intelligence.

IAI

Enjoyed that. Thanks.

Some of those insects had some serious heft relative to wing surface area. If it was shown in actual speed I bet they would have zipped away very quickly but the slo mo let you know it was a serious achievement.

How about a floating octopus filled with lighter than air made of flexible skeleton and solar skin. It ripples and morphs to conform with each wind gust to turn it into saved energy or gain lift. It uses opposing forces to it's advantage. It can turn into an arrow or wing or a parachute.

Thanks for explanation. I can see many uses for piezo technology. And no I did not know that the Wright Brothers "warped" their wings.
