The business that I worked for, had a walk-in safe that was as old as the building...100 years!
The combination for the safe was a five sequence number that was extremely touchy..had to be perfect.
spin to the first number
reverse spin 4 revs to the next number
reverse spin 3 revs to the next #
reverse spin 2 revs to the next #
reverse spin 1 rev to the last # and hope it would open.

On a good day, I could get it open in less than a minute.
If you tried to rush it...forget it..start over.

What was the final verdict on storing ammo in a safe? Good idea? Bad idea?

And what about storing full magazines; is there a downside? I heard the springs lose their spring after a while.

Common wisdom is to not store the mags loaded, but I've heard a lot of folks, I think including Jeff Higgins, say that they've stored mags fully loaded before with no issues after many years. My guess is that it's one of those things that could happen, but it's probably very rare, and may be due to a defect or poor metallurgy or something.

Why wouldn't you store ammo in a safe. That seems like a great place if you've got room. And if the house ever burns down and the fire dept is there, they don't have to worry about getting shot, because the ammo is not going to shoot through the safe.

Humidity and varying temperature extremes are the enemy of ammo. If the safe is not in a stable environment you will want to make sure you have a way to dehumidify the air inside. For a small lock box or safe, a Goldenrod dehumidifier will work. I've always wanted to make a gun cabinet like this

And if you keep the fridge going, it'll dehumidify things for you!

I'm getting plans together to get a custom home built. Dream home anyway's.... a combination vault door costs the same amount as a gun safe....cinder block up a cement room and camo it up in the basement and you wont just have a safe but a whole armory.-WW

All I can say is a Sentry Safe is crap. My ex was trying to get into her mom's safe to see if there was anything in there before she dumped it. Mom had dementia and had a real bad stroke, so she can't talk, write... Mom's safe was about 1 cu ft, and the outer shell had a rust gole the size of a half dollar. A locksmith suggested a hole saw and I was like, what? She brought it over and I whipped out my angle grinder and it cut through it like butter.. Dig out the cement lining and cut through the plastic inner. Easy peasy.

Having a substantial safe in the house could be selling point, so I don’t consider my safe a headache. I look at more like a value-added feature come time to sell.

Safe makers lie about capacity... unless you only have single shots, over/unders, and lever guns (skinny, no mags/pistol grips sticking out, etc).

As to mags.... I've shot mags that were loaded for 15 years (Ruger Mk II) with no issues feeding, etc. Springs wear out from being compressed and uncompressed, not staying in a static position.

Here is one of my safes, it is a 1942 Mosler X60 rated TLTR60 x 6. Measures 24"x24"x24" and weighs in at 1600#. No fire rating but I have it in an area that should not be in extreme fire for too long.

With all the bank buildings closing there is a source of Banking Equipment surplus, I use a teller station with 2 steel combination doors of 3/8" and fits small arms and ammo. Placed in a very difficult spot with no side or back access. No picture on this laptop to show.

I do have a couple more safes for other specific items.

Used commercial safes are a great deal, my X60 180.00 and the teller station was 60.00.

Check around with any retail stores or banks getting repuposed or torn down and "do the folks a favor" and get rid of that huge metal cabinet out of their way.

Hi Steve, yes it is the same. Got it all cleaned up and working smooth. No seal just an incredibly tight tolerance machining. I'll grab a picture tonight with the restored mating surface and painted interior. I clear coated the exterior to keep the aged look.

I have one like this, need to get it opened. But that could be a whole new can of worms because the owner of the bar it came out of, died, no one had the combination and not everything Jim did was above board..
I have no few old coke machines and really like this idea.
