You guys play Chess ?

I started my kid out young, now at 15, he is pretty darn good. He is autistic, and it is the kind of thing he takes to . He joined a chess league for a few years, and plays online all the time .
Once the weather turned to crap here , we started playing a few games a week .
Man, I gotta brush up . I was holding my own for the last few weeks, and we were pretty much heads up , then he just destroyed me 3 in a row like it was his job.
Good fun,
We all used to drink at this dirty little working mans bar after hours, and the bartender put out a chess board. We had a winters long competition . It was funny to see truck mechanics, and construction workers all dirty from a days work, knee deep in concentration playing chess, instead of chasing skirts and fighting .
Any body here ?

Damn...wish I'd paid more attention to the screen name given. Remember heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis? On a Joe Rogan blog, he said he played online chess. Coulda been one of your kid's opponents? Think of the status to say "I beat Lennox Lewis"...

I did for many years, haven't played in a long time.

My most memorable game was against the Oklahoma State Pen champion. I knew the guy that ran the pre release center in Lawton and he invited me to come out and play the guy.

I show up and they have made a big deal over the match. Audience of prisoners all pulling for the 6'7" 350 lb inmate I was about to play. I thought about throwing the match, but stupidity won out and I beat him, but he was tough. He was a good sport over the loss.

I started playing when I was about 11 or 12. Haven't played in a while - taught my now adult son how to play when he was a teenager.

We were on a vacation trip about 5 or 6 years ago. Staying at a timeshare/condo. Wife and I are browsing through the game room where you can also rent games/DVDs. Guy is there setting up a chess board - looks up and says do you play. I say a little, but it's been a while - and he asks if I'll play. He takes 1st move - I start my play with the first move of what is known as the Scholars Mate. I take the game in 4 moves. It was pretty funny.

He just walked by me watching that video, and said it is not going to work on him, " rookie move dad "

Occasionally until my chess club champion started wrecking me at age 14 lol.

Anyone watch “Queens Gambit?” Really entertaining.

That's great of your son!

When the guy didn't make any defensive move to my opening, I realized he must not have been knowledgeable of the strategy and that it was going to be a real quick game.

Dad taught me when I was 7. Got good enough that nobody in town could beat me. Went on to win a bunch of trophies in high school. Taught my son when he was 7 and he went on to set records and win a bunch of high school trophies. We are now about even. That being said, we are light years away from the people that commit to years of study and reach masters level. We both play online recreationally. It has been a lifelong hobby I'm glad my dad passed on to me.

Yes. And I am awful.

Play with my kids. Great fun.

My next door neighbor has a ranking. Never going to play that guy!

Dad taught me when I was young. Still play at least once a week. Pretty good player but not competitive.

Chess is a great equalizer.

I have a great deal of experience with the autistic spectrum. Glad to hear your son is doing well at the game.

Yes it was a good movie. I played as a child, but hadn't played in years. The family watched the movie together and now my daughter and I have been playing every night for the last two weeks. I've really enjoyed it.

I'm awful at it. I play against the computer because it doesn't laugh when I do something stupid.

cabmandone 12-08-2020 03:52 AM

My dad used to take me to a local bar that had a chess club. I haven't played in probably 30 years. My dad and I used to play a few matches each week.

Thanks for bringing back good memories. Played as a kid, did well locally. Then in college played some ranked players- it was pretty ugly.
I thought the Queens Gambit was pretty good. Great last game.
I watch Searching for Bobby Fischer once a year- pretty decent movie.

Played Chess a lot in my teen years.

Now, I prefer Euchre or Cribbage....they go better with a couple beers. :)

Agreed...

flatbutt 12-08-2020 05:32 AM

I did but not in a long time. However, FB III is getting into it so I'm gifting my old board to him along with a set of Star Wars chess figures for Christmas (amongst other stuff of course).

scotricker 12-08-2020 05:43 AM

I learned when I was a kid, taught my kids, now I play online sort-of regularly with my 11 year old grand daughter. Her sisters taught her. She wins sometimes ! oops, no mercy from that kid.

KevinTodd 12-08-2020 06:15 AM

Queen's Gambit was very entertaining.
