Foods you can't stand - why

We've got a long thread on what foods everyone can't stand. Now WHY can't you stand them?

masraum 01-08-2021 07:07 AM

For me, I think the main reason would either be texture or that the item is gross. I've had foods that didn't taste good, but I usually mark that up to it being poorly made, made with bad ingredients or just a recipe/version of that food that I didn't like.

I love, love, LOVE cheese. I'm also pretty sure that I will not eat maggot cheese. (never say never, but it's damn unlikely). I also don't have much interest in eating brains, eye balls, testicles, etc....

I will eat chicken or calves liver. I also eat sushi including the raw stuff.

THe main thing that I can think of that would fit the "texture" thing is fat, like from pork or beef or if the ends of bacon aren't cooked. I've had tongue that had a great flavor, but the texture bugged me.

Smell ... I've never even tried sauerkraut ... the smell of my mom cooking it made me wanna puke... I couldn't be in the house.

Reuben sammiches might be good ... but I'll never find out ;)

...and I generally like spicey slaws.... but that stuff reeks.

I've got a buddy that's the same way for kraut and, I think anything cabbage related. His family is Hungarian, and I guess the smell of his grandmother cooking cabbage and kraut was the same for him.

I make sauerkraut. We normally eat it cold, but sometimes we heat it up. I've never noticed that strong a smell. I know that some folks will cook cabbage with vinegar and call that a kind of kraut too.

Garlic and onions. Smell vile..

.

Smell, that's one that I should have had a separate entry for.

I get it too, I eat several foods that smell bad, but taste good (tuna, fish, stinky cheeses).

Blue cheese smells like vomit to me...

For the foods I don't care for, they have a combination of things in your poll - smell, texture, taste, etc. Including a choice like that might draw more votes.

I definitely should have included smell, but I made the poll a multiple choice, so folks could choose more than one item since I imagined that there might be multiple reasons.

Ah, I didn't realize it was mulltiple choice.

KFC911 01-08-2021 09:15 AM

I didn't know this thread was even a poll ... mobile view.

I'm sort of like Robert on ELR. (but half his size!)
Instead of touching my chin with new food....I almost touch my nose.
If it doesn't pass that test...no way.

For the little drips of heaven the rest of my family loved, liver, is to me is a complete, gag a maggot, make a buzzard puke, make a train take a dirt road epicurean disaster.

Smell, texture, taste. Texture, taste, smell. Taste, smell, texture.

You get the idea.

Recently we went to a local expensive seafood place. They had fresh Atlantic Salmon on special so I ordered it. I should have asked for the sauce on the side. It was VERY sour and tasted like a vinaigrette salad dressing. It was like sucking on a lime and I could not eat it. It just sucked with so much sourness. A ruined meal. They comped my meal.

Ha! Ha! This is one of the funniest descriptions I've seen in a loooong time. Gotta be serious!

In the other OP I listed, I checked the eating it too much in the past.

Golden Delicious apples
Cantaloupe

My family was in food: restaurants and food purveying. As a child, my uncle would bring home cases of both items all of the time. It was just overload.

I like apples and other melons but GD apples and Cantaloupe, I will take a pass on.

The last item is mac and cheese. I never grew up on this and I find the stuff in the box just gross. And I don't get mac and cheese attraction. My sons loved this stuff when they were younger. I made mac and cheese once using artisan cheese and good pasta and my kids hated it - They preferred the stuff in the box.

Tastes like it, too! Cilantro has a horrible taste, just like bittermelon. Beets reminds me of having to eat them as a child.

Not just the taste, the smell.

Mom used to cook liver and onions for dad, he likes that crap. I could not even go in the house if she was cooking that stuff.

Brussels sprouts are about the only food I will not eat.

ckelly78z 01-08-2021 05:55 PM

Broccoli, and Cauliflower almost make me gag from the smell, let alone the taste, and the texture.

Thanks ^^^Tobra, I will add Brussel Sprouts to the list as well.

Pelicun666 01-08-2021 07:42 PM

brussel sprouts.
