Interesting in that a lot of the "best vocalists" are singing someone else's song.

I get pipes, range and vocal talent, I do.

But to be the "best" you have to sing your own stuff, write your own stuff, matter: and no covers.

Funny how we don't ask who the "Best Male vocalist" is. Why is that?

Joni FTW in my mind but frankly it is about so much more than the voice.

Ronnie James Dio is up near the top.

John Oliva of Savatage is up there.

Rob Halford of Judas Priest is up there.

Blackie Lawless of WASP - way up there.

A talented singer can bring out the passion and emotion of any song, whether they wrote it or not. Just because you did not write the song does not mean it may not resonate with you.

I am a generally a fan of less is more, vocal gymnastics for the sake of vocal gymnastics are not for me.

I get it and trust me I have no issues with any of the very talented singers mentioned in this thread. Zero, less than none. I have learned some new names as a matter of fact.

The "best" is just different to me, the complete package.

Added to the few I've posted previously in this thread is Laura Guldemond, from the band Burning Witches (Switzerland) - from high-pitch shrieks to low-down growls, and everything in-between (everything that I love in a wimminz singer).

Also Vicky Psarakis from the band The Agonist - awesome, crazy, instantly recognizable voice and style that really does it for me.

No way to really answer that question.

So instead, I'm posting a link to one of my favorites from my current playlist:

For sure, not in the first three or four rows, anyway.

Best pop music alto: Karen Carpenter. Even I can sing in at least part of her range.

Most accurate, best vice control: Names like Doris Day, Whitney Houston and Linda Ronstadt.

Best labor rally singer: Joan Baez, hands down. I get misty every time I see this one:

John Walker turned me on to Eilen Jewel. Good stuff.

I saw your endorsement on Page 1, and my thought was this one. Her vocals are fine. Her songwriting is brilliant. She wrote masterpieces similar to those of Mr. Dylan.

I am a musician, and so I admire the technical accuracy and skill, when I see it, just as much as the artistic expression which is so important. This song blew me away, for her skill. Her voice control:
