Tundra or F-150
 

Time for a new vehicle.

I've narrowed my choices to a new Toyota Tundra or new Ford F-150. I need 4 doors ,short bed,and 4 wheel drive .
Which truck is better for occasional car trailer hauling?
Which truck has a better reliability record?
Anybody here have any experience with these models?

Both are good trucks. Smart purchases. My sense is the Tundra has a very loyal following.

Agree. The F150 I think is the best selling US vehicle of all time.

You cannot go wrong with either option. Drive both, it may come down to color options and interior preferences.

In 2011, after renting a F150 for a week in Texas I was headed to the Ford dealer to buy a new F150. I stopped at the Brand new at the time Toyota dealer and test drive a Tundra. The salesman at Ford was an arse hole and wouldn’t deal, I went back to Toyota and bought a truck. 10 years later and over 400,000 kms of use as a daily driver, farm truck, towing rig (18,000 lbs a few times), the truck is still tight and runs awesome. I made the right choice back then and when the next gen Tundra comes out, I will be buying another.

Unclebilly seems to share the same sentiment I have seen in other Tundra owners. It's like hmmmm...what's more reliable? A Tundra or a fiberglass-handled framing hammer? Tossup.

Pop the hood on a Tundra then on the Ford. Tell me which one would you would work on yourself.

I vote F-150...........My 5.0L F-150 is pretty cool.

F150. My 2012 F150 is still running strong at 210k. crewcab 4x4 v8. Only service has been a battery, water pump, and hoses. The Tundra is the only other truck I would consider buying, but they are getting long in the tooth, get horrible mileage even compared to my truck which isn't earth shattering, and the interior is nowhere near as nice. Toyota is supposed to update in 2022. I had an F150 platinum 4x4 with the eco boost as a loaner, what an impressive truck.

But can it do this?

Sure, since it has a higher tow rating than any Tundra.

1/2 Ton trucks nowadays are really 3/4 rated from the 80s and 90s. Lets face it.

the highest tow rating is 10000 for a Tundra, 13000 plus for Fi50. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Again, the only truck I would buy besides an F150 is a Tundra but the design has not been updated and is dated.

Try it and report back... I have also towed my 13000lb tractor on a 4000 lb gooseneck trailer 200 miles each way to the dealer a couple times...

The Tundra is hard in gas over 60 MPH but it’s been cheap to own, still worth over $10,000. The difference in Fuel economy is easily offset by better resale and lower op costs.

I just traded my 4yr old 80k mile tundra and got $11k less than I paid new. Don’t think you can do that with an f150.

Look, I have owned three F250 diesels and one f350. towed everything under the sun. as I stated before, just because you can docent mean you should. I have towed concrete pumps with a Jeep Comanche, it pulled it but not rated. I watch idiots at the boat ramps with SUVS that on paper can pull hem, but that boat will own them in a wind or down hill. Not arguing with you but still see the F150 a better rig in my experience. Beretta, all used trucks are crazy expensive now, sometimes more than new and yes you can. the problem with Toyota is the crewcab only comes with a 5 foot bed, I can get the Ford with a 6.5 {like I have} and actually use it like a truck

Traded a 2yo tundra with 30k on it a while back and it cost me $2k plus tax - bought a $40k truck new off the lot back when gas was $5 for 28k. No one wanted the large cab and leather at the time with gas so expensive. Traded it back 2 years later - needed an SUV when #2 came long (2 kids and 2 dogs didn’t fit) for $26k. Best deal ever.

The kicker - it replaced an LR3. That got worse gas mileage, so I actually made out.

Counting back I guess this was 2011. Wow time really flies.

Are you saying I don’t use my tundra with the 5.5’ bed like a truck?

You don’t exactly pull a gooseneck trailer with a car or SUV. You don’t haul cattle to market in a stock trailer with a moped... ever pull a cow out of a mud hole with your F150? Ever have it loaded up with 2000 lbs of downhole tools and go pounding down lease roads? Ever live in your truck while working on a remote site in the middle of nowhere? Ever tow a race car 3000 miles round trip to Laguna Seca or other race tracks?

Pretty sure I use my Crew Cab Tundra with a 5.5’ box like a truck. And I do have a 1 ton dually duramax that’s been parked since I bought the Tundra.
