Did the NHL screw up?
Today's outdoor game in Lake Tahoe postponed. First period at 3 pm eastern. Resumes midnight eastern time due to bright sun causing slushy ice.
Wait! Didn't they play an outdoor game in Dallas and San Jose? I think they didn't properly setup the refrigeration system to account for a bright sunny day. Humorous note: Interviewing Bettman: he said "Its overcast everywhere except where the sun is". Well isn't that a brilliant revelation. Can you imagine the weather report: it will be overcast except where the sun it... it will be dry except where it is raining... I know what he meant, that there is a break in the clouds and it is causing direct sunlight only on the ice but Bettman has always been the ultimate hoser of the NHL. He has more enemies than Brad Marchand! :D |
You gotta cut him some slack as he is after all - a lawyer by avocation

Well, it is true that 98% of lawyers give the rest a bad reputation...

I was at the first Heritage Classic outdoor game in Edmonton back in 03 or 04. It was bright and sunny but -20°C... damn cold. No issues of ice thawing at that game.

They had two options, sun shade overhead, or play at night.
Anyone who has built a rink knows rain and sun on a warmish day are killers. But it is a delicate balancing act, keeping the ice 'not too cold', which results in chipping, and 'too warm' where it can't take the sun. There have been a lot of outdoor games, this is the first serious problem. It's a crap-shoot. They lost yesterday. |
