Seriously considering a family dog again - Border Collie
We had one but a mix between BC and Aussie. What a smart pup he was. He lived to 18 years but should have passed away long before. Our vet said he was just hanging on for us but we just couldn’t put him down though we should’ve. Anyway, that was about 15 years ago and we’ve been dog less ever since and have gotten very used to that lifestyle. I don’t know now if we can keep up with such a high energy breed but I don’t think I’d want another breed that’s not as smart.
Does anyone here have any experience with a BC breed that you don’t put to work or exercise every day? How destructive do they tend to become? |

BC's like any other breed will have a variety of temperament. But that said...the AVERAGE is high energy and needs a job to do. My Mom had BC's for years (even had 23 of them at the same time - oh lord...).
If you do get one, your best shot at a dog who maybe needs a little less constant stimulation might be to get an older dog. Much as I love them, if I were to suggest a perfect home for the average BC, it would be a home where the dog could get plenty of exercise or work. If you are avid runner, this could be a great dog for you. If you are looking for a chill house dog - not the best choice (for most of them). angela

We have two of the beasties.
The old girl is a bit cranky with other dogs but is a lovely, protective, hard working little dog. The new guy is a bit of a goof but he is handsome and entertaining. Not nearly as high drive as the female. Ymmv...

There are smart dogs that don’t run full afterburner. My neighbor bought an Australian shepherd that has little to do all day and is a pretty miserable and poorly behaved dog as a result.

Family dog? May I suggest a Labra Doodle. There are 3 running around here now. Just awesome temperament. Perfect for a family.

Our border collie is a little more than a year old. If you’re not prepared to exercise them at least twice a day and give them some indoor stimulation on top of that, you are doing a disservice to the dog. These are not laid-back house dogs.

![]() The one in the front is mine . The other two are my sons. I can’t imagine not having her. Life wouldn’t be the same. Smart and affectionate. That being said, I take her for a two mile run every morning and then various ball throwing venues in the afternoon.Excercise and mental stimulation are necessary. It’s a big commitment. |

They can be very much a one person dog.
Russ is an exception to that rule. Pepper has been great with people and kids. It was kind of funny when my son was small that she would herd his friends without them even knowing it. We have found them to be great family dogs.

I have a red heeler mix and I wish I had a herd of cattle for her. Seriously. She bounces off the walls and fences for the first half of each day.

We had a border collie, a cattle dog and a 1/2 & 1/2 pup. Best dogs ever but they do need activity. Best part of having 2 at the same time they entertain each other.

Timely thread! We looked at a bernedoodle yesterday. Pretty sweet 110 lb mound of kid friendly gentle dog. We might get one but try for something in the 70lb range.

We’ve had several breeds over the years (4 dogs now). All I can say is that each have their unique ways and all are amazing in their own way. If a BC is no longer a good fit, don’t be afraid to branch out. You won’t be disappointed. It’s why everyone feels their dog is the best ever. It’s because they all are!

Are those doodle mix breads smart and hardy like the BC? I want a breed that likes to hike, camp and run alongside while I ride my Mtn bike. I want a dog that can keep up with me rather than the other way around.
