my weird job interviews

So I just did my second job interview in 23 years.

Just like my first job interview (2.5 years ago.... my original job's interview was 'fill out an application NOW - you are going to training tomorrow') this one was weird.

Why? Zoom? Nah, used to that for class and work.

It was the interview committee. Of the 6 people on it, I currently work directly with 5 of them (the 6th was from the police department....) and of those 5, 4 of them have been my students for the Linux courses I teach - including the guy who would be my direct supervisor. The job? Linux administrator to support the ERP system and devs (my current position).

What makes it really weird is that the HR department makes the committee come up with the List of Questions, approves them, and then all of the candidates are asked the same question by the same person. No follow ups, no probing, etc. So we all get to play the game of "I'm pretending I don't really know you and how you would answer this question on the importance of documentation.." etc.

HR departments usurp power that they should NEVER have.

It sounds like the old "bureaucracy paper blizzard" cover your ass in case someone thinks you were hired because you are friends, or same race, or go to the same church or same political leaning.

Having served on quite a few committees I understand it... but the rule about followups, etc. is silly - all in the name of "sameness". And it isn't new - this goes back to 1998 at least.... It only really breaks down when you have a well known internal candidate. And since we are state we can't really just bypass a job posting and deal with internals internally and then post if needed, which I also understand the reasoning behind.

Was the 6th from Alachua County, Gainesville PD or SF Community College PD? They might be trying to snuff you out, id10t.:D

One of our Santa Fe officers. Our interview committees for "professional" positions always include at least one non-A&P employee and at least one from a different department.

Did they roll their eyes, look at each other and go, "oh that is YOUR friend".
