DHL Express

Anyone else have problems with them? I buy a lot of watches and the Japan sellers usually ship DHL. The watches arrive within a week, and this is the problem I have with DHL. Whenever the watches are delivered, I am never home. I get a text the day before regarding delivery without a signature, and I NEVER authorize it. However, the DHL driver always leaves it on my driveway, anywhere between 2pm and 7pm. Unfortunately, I usually don't get home until 9 or 10pm, and the parcel is sitting there all that time. Anyone can walk by and be a porch pirate. I have complained to DHL about it before, hoping they would leave a pickup tag, but nope. Today, the tracking says I signed for the package. I saw this about 10 minutes after delivery and emailed DHL to let them know I was not the one that signed for the package. The watches are not a trivial amount, valued anywhere from $1k to $5k+.

What would you guys do? I am holding off buying more watches because I also realized I have a problem. lol

It may not work for you guys in Hawaii with no front fences. But what I'm doing at my place, as part of my fence/front gate rebuild is making a courier drop box.

I guess it will be a fancy hole in the fence. Something like a rectangular stainless steel frame that the courier drops things through that can't be viewed from the road.

Well, I just got home and guess what? There is no package! Called DHL, and of course, they are closed until 5 am Mountain time. I let the seller know and they said to check with the security guard at my apartment. I told them, this is a house and I have no security guard. Oh boy!

Do you use their app?

WPOZZZ 03-30-2021 04:27 AM

Nope, never used their app. I contacted the seller and they contacted DHL Japan. Their records said it was left with the security guard for my building. Interesting as I live in a house and there is no apartment building on my street. I emailed DHL and they got back to me a few minutes ago. They have initiated an inquiry and a research specialist will call me by 10 am MST. I would sure like to see my "signature" for the parcel!

They claim that you can use the app to change delivery time or place.

DHL is the biggest freight forwarder in the world. They don't care about your watch. Try to get the shipper to use someone else.

With parcels that valuable this is a stupid problem with a simple solution. Surely you have mail centers nearby. Besides, DHL home delivery has to be expensive. You need a business address.

I'd get something like this:

i use the app.
DHL is best service of all, for Canada.
4-5 days, to the door, as a rule - from Europe.
FedEx, USPS, UPS. - 2-3 weeks from the USA, sometimes longer, sometimes never.
i still purchase items from Pelican Parts - other than that, i now order from Europe, if possible.
DHL is pretty well always less expensive, also. fwiw.

I believe in our COVID world - these parcel delivery companies are exempt from collecting signatures. I know our UPS gal stated just that - even though the package had signature required, she doesn't have to get a signature.

javadog 03-30-2021 11:20 AM

Have the seller in Japan ship them using Fedex, until EMS is back on line.

Ronbo 03-30-2021 12:29 PM

DHL Express

It’s the seller’s responsibility to get the item to you. Let them deal with DHL and you contest the charge with your bank.

Unfortunately, prior to Covid DHL did the same thing on my deliveries.

I have spoken to the seller, and he said because of Covid, DHL is the only shipper.

Zeke - I have complained to DHL several times about the driver leaving my parcels while noting someone has signed for them, when in fact no one did. I hoped they could manage this internally, but I guess not. On further purchases I will tell the seller I will pick up the item at DHL. I hope DHL can follow these instructions.

WPOZZZ 03-30-2021 05:51 PM

My parcel was in my mailbox when I checked it at noon. When I left the house about 1:15, this notice was on my mailbox.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1617151810.jpg

Japan’s EMS is back in operation to some countries but the US isn’t one of them, at least not to the continental US. I never looked into Hawaii. Mail rides on passenger planes and when those don’t fly, neither does the mail.

FedEx has their own planes, so they are still in operation. They are a little more expensive than DHL, but I find them more reliable.

rattlsnak 03-30-2021 07:33 PM

FDX has 3-4 flights a day to the US from Japan and they have also picked up most of the mail contracts.

DHL routinely does not deliver to our shop on the date tracking says "out for delivery", then we later check tracking to see that "recipient refused delivery" So we call, and say "WTF" we are open and have a dedicated shipping/receiving counter. They say "oh, duty is owing and we can't take payment at the door) We say, you mean like every other competitor does? Why do you say we refused shipment when it was never on the truck? Why don't you notify us that charges are due? DHL says "thats not how we do it" F/U DHL.... Its at the pint now if a vendor says they will only ship DHL, we shop elsewhere.....

Cheers

Why not have everything shipped to your office address?

unclebilly 04-01-2021 01:46 AM

I got fed up with Purolator (Canada Post owned courier) and having no luck dealing with customer service, I emailed their president (LinkedIn is your friend) the details with tracking numbers of shipments gone wrong.

I got several calls and texts from high up customer service folk there and now have the Calgary depot manager’s cell number. Call anytime you have any issues.

Since involving their top management, there have been no further problems...
