Have we discussed 924's?
 
I had one . It was someone's little track rat toy . It had side draft webers, a mild cam, header, adjustable cam sprocket, and some aftermarket suspension stuff .
I put a cage in it , and ran it on 14 inch slicks . I took it in trade for some work I did, that I was never going to get paid for . It had no title , so I never did much with it . I was going to autocross it , but I had just had my son, and things were financially kind of tough in those years.
I did drive it around on a Repair/towing plate for a bit, but did not want to press my luck .
I sold it off, but I remember really liking it . More so than the 944 that I had at that time . It was lighter, nimbler, and pretty quick with the sidedrafts , and mods . It made all the right noises .
I sort of have the jones for a 931, but I dont see myself buying any older p cars for a while .
I always liked the Martini edition .
Im sure a few of you have owned some. Thoughts ?

Mine was the same red metallic color with the same gold wheels. It was a pretty sharp car for what it was

I had martini edition and friend of family had a 931

His 931 was well taken care of, and a concours winner. He had the cool checkerboard interior. It was about the same hp as a base 944 iirc.

When I got the martini edition, I was sick and tired of looking through rusty 911 floorboards and just wanted a car with heat and a defroster.

Instead, I upgraded to a car with a battery box that had rusted into the passenger footwell.

It more or less got me where I wanted to go, and the heat was marginal, like the climate controls. Changing the rear drum brakes was a pia because you had to break those big arse wheel nuts.

I liked the audi engine. It had the same timing belt as the 944 iirc, but didn't run the water pump? so it wasn't as stressed. Never had the snapped 944 belt worries.

It had the same pia rear hatch/ latch issues/ frame delamination issues. Excellent gas mileage. Tires were cheap due to reasonable size.

Would I want another? No. No love after driving the 944, and no love for that after driving the 951, and I never loved that compared to a 911.

I found myself lusting after the 911 with the rusted floorboards. Full circle.

just my humble opinions/ I can safely say, although I'm glad I got to drive one, I do not miss it one bit. Same with 944 na.

You couldn't pay me to drive around with those martini stripes. All show. No go. ;)

Never liked em. A guy I used to work with loved 944's and I was never a fan of those either. Always been a 911 guy.

I had an '87 924S in the early '90s. It was perfect for me. People around here thought it was a Mazda RX7, so I pretty much flew under the radar. The tires had enough sidewall to allow the wheels to survive on our frost heaved roads.
It wasn't overly endowed with power but usually felt like it wanted to go faster. I had it to an indicated 135mph a couple of times and it didn't seem right that I couldn't drive those speeds all the time.
The chassis was a delight. It was so predictable. Some cars give little warning at the limit. The 924 felt like it would tap you on the shoulder a few seconds before anything happened and say "In 25 meters the rear wheels are going to step out 20 centimeters to the right. Be ready to catch it with a bit of opposite lock."
Such a forgiving car. It took care of you.

The guy that owned the Porsche dealership that I worked for brought one of the first 924’s back from Germany when he was over there for a Porsche meeting. This was before they were available at our dealership. He wanted me to do a PDI on it so afterward I road tested it. I thought it felt and sounded like it was going to come apart at about 4K RPM. After that when we started selling and servicing them, I never liked them and the turbo version even less! 924S and 944 were a vast improvement.

I remember reading the 924 torque tubes were possibly more stout than the 944 torque tubes in terms of hp upgrades, but I can't remember. One thing is for sure, I wouldn't trust the original torque tube bearings in any of them at this point. Mine was noisy, but never went bad. Who knows.

Never owned one. Never thought it was worth paying the Porsche tax for parts.

I had a chance to buy a 924GTS club sport, one of 17 made. I ended up passing on the deal, now I kick myself because I really should’ve bought the car. The price was something like low 30s, now it’s worth $150K to $200K probably

I’ve driven them a few times since the 80s.
No offense, but it’s hard for me to imagine anyone really wanting one of those, esp. the 77-82 ones.

My first Porsche was an early 83 944, but never liked the slim shape of the 924s. The only 924 that I liked had the fender flares, and looked like a 944.

One of our regional PCA members is an attorney. He bought a lightly used 924 that was brown to celebrate passing the bar. He was already married and had the first kid. One night he was awakened with the "cop" knock at 3:00 AM. He got us and saw blue lights in the street everywhere. A drunk driver, driving his mom's car drove across the front yard and hit his 924 broadside and pushed it across his yard and out into the street. He lives on curving street, and the drunk was going way fast.

The "cockroach" as my friend called it was totaled. At the salvage yard they cleaned out the personal items, and he took the shift knob and a few other pieces. He wrote the insurance for the drunk's mom a nice letter on his attorney letterhead. They sat up and noticed. He never stated a value in the letter, he let them do that. They sent him an offer for the price an really nice 944 Turbo S. He accepted that, and bought a nice 944 non turbo with the proceeds, and helped remodel the kitchen.

He said at the salvage yard the kids wanted to have a funeral for the old 924. He said it was indeed an emotional time for the entire family as they all loved that car that had gotten him back home from working for all those years. It was his daily driver.
