Where To Take Used Coolant

I have about 7 gallons of used coolant that I need to dispose of and no one seems to take used coolant anymore. I have tried Autozone, O'Reilly, and Express Oil and nobody will take it. Any suggestions are welcome!!!

Our county has an “environmental services” operation where they accept all sorts of hazardous material on one Saturday each month. Your county may have one too.

Good call. Most cities/counties have some sort of "hazardous waste disposal" that's usually available periodically (weekly, monthly, etc...) where the take paints, chemicals, etc...

Here is Oklahoma City we have a hazardous waste disposal facility open from Tuesday through Saturday. They take paint, antifreeze, motor oil, florescent bulbs, batteries and so on. All get disposed of properly. It is a "free" thing, just added to part of the city water-sewer-trash-storm drainage fee. The city realized it was much better to have that and keep people from just dumping those products.

We also have a large trash pickup once per month. Appliances, fencing, tree limbs, and any old houshold item too big to put in a trash bin.

I haven't checked with Walmart lately but they used to have a recycle station outside the automotive bays. Then I searched and generally, no.

We also have a recycle center open to the public 2 Saturdays a month. I understand there is a line here so maybe go early. Hopefully yours is easy.

Ours is on the other side of town. Last time I was there it cost $25 to recycle a $99 microwave.

At the local Meijer grocery store they used to have one weekend a year event in the parking lot. You could drive up through a bunch of trailers and unload all of your electronics in less than 5 min. I think Best Buy still accepts used batteries. The lithium is valuable. The standard ones they turn into fertilizer i think. Our Michigan household recycling program no longer functions and is for show, to my understanding.

That sort of thing is usually only free if you live in some geographic area. For instance, Houston has similar things, but I believe you have to have a Houston address to use them. I'm a couple of miles from the county line, and the next county has one, but I can't use it. I think my county has had one, but not in several years.

Yea, it requires a OKC water bill to use them. And it does not apply to a business.

OKC is 670 square miles, so a large area to service.

Thanks, Opelika has an Environmental Services department and I called, left a message, but no word back yet.

Any chance you have Auburn water service?

Quick search shows Auburn is having a household hazardous Waste Day in a couple weeks.

No, I live in Opelika. Thanks though. I will continue to check with Environmental Services on Monday. I may even call a shop or two to see what they do with used coolant.

I can't help with any ideas for antifreeze. In fact I have one of my own, and that is I have an old snowmobile gas can with about 5 gallons of very old mower gas in it. I asked a gas station service guy (he was company guy maintaining the pumps) about it and he suggested Auto Zone, which was a no go. I don't mean to hijack your thread, but does anyone have any ideas about getting rid of old gas you wouldn't put into an engine?

I only had one gallon of old gas to get rid of. I poured it onto a baking sheet a little at a time and let it evaporate. It took a week.

I take mine to an oil change place. They have a machine shop that takes it from them. I could also take it, at certain times, to the county recycle.

If it does not have dirt or any crud in it, add 1/2 a gallon to the full tank of your daily driver. Then when the next tank of gas happens, dump in the second half. It will mix in witht he good fuel, and your car will never know.

I had 2.5 gallons of 2 cycle gas that I no use for as all my 2 cycle gear was replaced with battery powered tools. It was a couple of years old as it was shuffled to the back of my storage building. I dug it out, and poured it into the 21 gallon tank of my El Camino and never noticed any changes.

Come to think of it, I did that a few years ago. I wasn’t brave enough to put it in a car, so I put it in my 50 year old tractor which had a dirt simple carburetor. Still not brave enough to put it in a car, might do it with a lawnmower.

OTOH, I had some hopped up VP racing gas with propylene oxide and dinitromethane added in that I put in the rotary lawn mower to get rid of it. That 3.5 HP Briggs and Stratton became a little monster. Where it used to bog in the thicker grass it mowed that grass with anger. After setting for a week a lot of those additives evaporated or eventually I would have had the rod slap out of the side of the case.

When I said "get rid of it" it could have been either one, the gas or the mower. No way can a normal engine survive that kind of fuel.

Just dilute the hopped up fuel, or old fuel with a full tank of fresh gas. If you are afraid, just put in a quart at a time. It will not matter with all that dilution to normal gas.
